Kelsey Kull, an Ecology and Environmental Science major concentrating in Sustainability, recently studied abroad in Costa Rica!
Kelsey shares, "Growing up in Maine, I have always appreciated the environment and wildlife. I knew I wanted to pursue a career that would allow me to better understand and protect the natural environment. Staying in Maine for college felt important to me, and UMaine stood out to me because of its strong Environmental Science program, wide range of research opportunities, and supportive professors. Throughout my time in Costa Rica so far, I have really loved traveling to different parts of the country. One of my favorite memories was hiking El Tigre Waterfalls and going zip lining in Monteverde with my friends. I would encourage other UMaine students to consider studying abroad in a place they may not initially expect! Costa Rica was not at the top of my list at first, but I could not imagine studying anywhere else. Take advantage of every opportunity and stay open-minded! Costa Rica has been an incredible place to study the environment because it is recognized as a global leader in sustainability and is also one of the most biodiverse countries in the world. Seeing these policies and systems in action has helped me broaden my perspective and deepen my appreciation for how different countries approach environmental protection. Living and studying here has also helped me grow more independent and discover what I am most passionate about within the environmental field."
Kelsey also says that one of her favorite parts of studying abroad was the friends she made along the way.
