As the new academic year gets underway, the School of Nursing would like to thank our healthcare partners, who provide 740 hours of clinical training to each student in our program. These same partners also volunteer to help our first-year students move into campus and collaborate with us on grants and other initiatives to advance the nursing workforce. For all of these reasons and more, the students, faculty, and staff are so grateful!

At the UMaine School of Nursing, no student should have to navigate the transition to college and nursing school alone. 💙

This year, we expanded our commitment to students’ academic, emotional, and social well-being by hiring six peer mentors for our first-year nursing students. Each mentor is assigned to a small section of NUR 150: The Science of Wellness and Mindfulness and NUR 101: Introduction to Nursing and College.

They will also host weekly student hours in our Wellness Room, offering support with everything from Brightspace and time management to navigating conflict, managing stress, and finding a sense of belonging.

Adjunct Spotlight — Meet Shannon L. Smith, RN, PED-BC! 🩺💙

This fall marks seven years of teaching at the University of Maine for Shannon, who teaches the Pediatric Clinical Rotation on Grant 8.

Shannon’s journey into nursing was inspired by her own child’s courageous battle with leukemia. Watching the compassion and dedication of the nurses who cared for her child inspired Shannon to make that same difference in the lives of children and their families. More than a decade later, she continues to care for pediatric patients while sharing her passion with the next generation of nurses.

Shannon loves teaching at UMaine because she believes nursing is more than a profession—it’s a calling. She enjoys helping students connect classroom learning to real-world patient care and watching them grow into compassionate, confident nurses. One of the greatest rewards is seeing those students eventually become colleagues.

A board-certified pediatric nurse and current FNP student at UMaine, Shannon works full-time as a pediatric nurse on Grant 8 at Northern Light Eastern Maine Medical Center. Outside of work and school, she’s a mom to two teenage boys and enjoys spending time with her boyfriend and their combined six kids, cheering them on at their sporting events.

We are so grateful for Shannon’s dedication to pediatric nursing, nursing education, and our UMaine students! 💙

Please join us in celebrating Dr. Becky Dias!

This week, Becky successfully defended her doctoral dissertation and accepted a new appointment as Assistant Professor in the University of Maine School of Nursing.

A member of our nursing community for seven years, Becky teaches across our undergraduate curriculum, advises more than 200 first- and second-year nursing students, and helps welcome future Black Bears to UMaine.

Her impact is perhaps best captured by our students. In recent messages of gratitude, students described Becky as someone who makes them feel “comfortable, heard, and supported,” who “lights up a room,” and who represents “the kind of nurse and educator I hope to become one day.”

Becky brings clinical expertise, compassion, enthusiasm, and a deep commitment to student success to everything she does.

Congratulations, Dr. Dias, on earning your PhD and beginning this exciting next chapter as an Assistant Professor! 🐻💙

Adjunct Appreciation Spotlight – Kendall Doyle, MSN, RN-BC

Meet Kendall Doyle, MSN, RN-BC, who teaches NUR 335 Clinical for the University of Maine School of Nursing.

Kendall’s passion for nursing comes from a genuine desire to help people by meeting them where they are in their health journey. She values taking the time to listen to patients, learn about their lives, and provide them and their families with the knowledge and skills they need to confidently manage their care at home and help prevent hospital readmissions.

Teaching has become an extension of that passion. Remembering just how overwhelming nursing school felt 16 years ago, Kendall is committed to helping students bridge the gap between the classroom and the bedside. She enjoys working with eager, engaged student nurses and is dedicated to supporting their successful transition into professional nursing practice. Kendall has taught for UMaine on and off for several years, sharing her experience with the next generation of nurses.

In 2025, Kendall presented her capstone project, Targeted Training for Dedicated Education Unit Preceptors, at the Association for Nursing Professional Development National Conference. The experience provided an exciting opportunity to share her work while engaging with nursing research and innovation in clinical education on a national stage.

Thank you, Kendall, for your dedication to our students and the nursing profession. We are grateful to have you as part of the UMaine School of Nursing community!

🌟 Adjunct Appreciation Spotlight 🌟

Meet Courtney Elizabeth Macdonald, BSN, RN, a Pediatric Nurse and clinical adjunct faculty member with the University of Maine School of Nursing.

Courtney teaches NUR 417: Pediatric/Family Clinical and has been teaching with the University of Maine School of Nursing for two full years.

Courtney was drawn to the nursing profession after her mother was diagnosed with cancer during her senior year of high school. Witnessing the compassionate care her mother received profoundly changed Courtney’s perspective and inspired her desire to provide hands-on, quality care and support to patients and families during some of their most challenging times.

What Courtney loves most about nursing is providing empathetic care and serving as an advocate for her patients and their families. She views nursing as a lifelong commitment to learning and growth and believes that through innovation, knowledge, and experience, the profession will continue to transform healthcare for the better.

Courtney has truly enjoyed becoming a clinical adjunct faculty member for the University of Maine School of Nursing. Mentoring nursing students reinforces her own clinical knowledge and skills while providing opportunities to guide students in a practical clinical setting. From patient care and head-to-toe assessments to medication management and responding to acute changes in patient status, Courtney believes that guidance and feedback are essential components of nursing education.

She also enjoys helping students recognize the many opportunities nursing offers, including continued education, leadership, education, and advanced practice roles.

Outside of nursing and teaching, Courtney is a proud wife and mother of twin daughters. She enjoys cooking, sports, traveling, working out, spending quality time with family and friends, and vacationing at her family lake house on Spednic Lake and summer cottage in Wallace, Nova Scotia.
