Job Opening in the Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering for a Tenure Track Assistant Professor:

The Department of Chemical and Biomedical Engineering (CBE) at the University of Maine, the flagship campus of the University of Maine System, invites applications for Assistant Professor in Chemical Engineering (tenure-track) as part of a cluster hire focused on Green Engineering and Materials (GEM), led by the Advanced Structures and Composites Center (ASCC). At this time the UMaine College of Engineering is extensively expanding both facilities and programing.
Applicants must have earned a Ph.D. (or equivalent) in Chemical Engineering or a closely related field, such as Polymer Science & Engineering, by the date of hire. The successful candidate will be expected to show strong commitment to quality teaching and establish a sustainable, extramurally funded research program with a primary focus on topics in support of the GEM. The faculty member may also affiliate with other UMaine research centers.
CBE (http://www.umaine.edu/chb/) has 17 faculty and offers ABET accredited B.S. degrees and also M.S. and Ph.D. degrees in Chemical Engineering. Advancement through the faculty ranks at UMaine is through a series of structured, merit-based evaluations occurring on a determined schedule, each of which includes substantial peer input.
The ASCC (https://composites.umaine.edu), the largest university-based research center in Maine, is planning construction of the Green Energy and Materials lab (GEM), a 70,000 ft2 addition which will house the research Factory of the Future (FoF). The FoF will be a first-of-its-kind testbed for digital flexible manufacturing, including research on the manufacture and testing of large new systems made from bio-based and other advanced materials.

EXPLORE IT! BUILDING THE NEXT GENERATION OF SUSTAINABLE FOREST BIOPRODUCT RESEARCHERS – Summer Opportunity for 2022

“Explore it! Building the Next Generation of Sustainable Forest Bioproduct Researchers” at the University of Maine Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI) aims for participants to develop and utilize new knowledge in an ethical manner to address forest bioproduct issues impacting society.

This program provides 10 undergraduates with a ten-week summer research experience, leveraging the focus areas of the University of Maine’s Forest Bioproducts Research Institute (FBRI). The focus on sustainable forest bioproducts is highly topical and of great global importance in the context of sustainable energy and material alternatives. In collaboration with faculty mentors, students conduct research advancing their general knowledge of the field and one of several thematic elements, including: i) sustainability and life cycle assessment, ii) feedstock extraction/modification, iii), process control and sensing, iv) nanomaterial production and utilization, v) new product development and vi) nanotechnology risk assessment.

The REU program concludes with a forest products industry field trip to Chile (subject to possible COVID-19 travel restrictions) and a research conference where participants present their work to faculty and students at the University of Concepcion-UDT. A unique set of evaluation and assessment tools are employed that allow tracking of student performance, thus offering feedback to students and the program.

Funding for this program is provided by the National Science Foundation. Women, minorities, and students with disabilities are strongly encouraged to apply.
