Dr. Pank Agrrawal has published a new article in The Conversation US examining whether rising Social Security benefits will be enough to keep pace with increasing health care costs.

The piece explores the financial pressures facing retirees as health care expenses continue to climb. Read his article here:

Some advocates for older Americans want the government to change the index used for this adjustment to one more tailored to their spending patterns.

🍽️ Ever wonder what you're actually supposed to do at a business dinner?

Which fork do you use? How do you introduce yourself? What do you talk about with someone you’ve never met? And how do you make networking feel a little less awkward?

MBS students got to practice all of it at Doing Business at Dinner!

Students spent the evening networking with professionals from event sponsors Cross Insurance Agency and Enterprise Mobility, then sat down for a three-course dinner with MBS faculty and staff. With guidance from Jean Papalia of A+ Etiquette, they practiced handshakes, conversation, dining etiquette, and all those little details that can make a professional setting feel a lot more comfortable.

Because you shouldn't have to figure this stuff out for the first time at an internship interview, networking event, or business dinner. Practice now. Confidence later. 💼

🚪 Sometimes you just have to walk through the door.

For Marketing major Andie Lovejoy, that meant taking a chance on an internship she wasn’t sure she was ready for—and discovering just how much she could do.

This summer, Andie worked as a Business Management Intern at VIA, an employee-owned advertising agency in Portland, Maine. She worked across multiple projects, collaborated with creative teams and executives, communicated directly with clients, and helped lead an intern project for a nonprofit.

One of her biggest takeaways? Leadership doesn’t always mean having all the answers. Sometimes it means helping your team find theirs.

Andie returned to MBS with new skills, more confidence, and professional connections she’ll carry into her final year at UMaine.

Her advice to other students? Apply—even when you doubt yourself. You might be surprised where that “yes” takes you. 💙

IVAN MANEV: INTRO TO INTERNATIONAL BUSINESS

Business doesn’t stop at the border.

What happens when a company expands into a new country? How do culture and politics influence business decisions? Why do trade wars matter to American companies? And how can a company navigate completely different laws, currencies, and markets?

In MGT 343: Introduction to International Business, you’ll explore the forces shaping business around the world—and how they affect companies right here at home.
You’ll dig into topics like:
🌎 Global markets & economic development
💶 oreign currencies & international finance
🤝 International trade & market entry
⚖️ Government, laws & regulation
💡 Culture & business decision-making
🌱 Ethics, sustainability & corporate responsibility
📈 Global business strategy

And you won’t just learn from a textbook. Throughout the course, you’ll examine real-world companies and current events—from Tesla’s expansion in Shanghai to Starbucks entering the Italian market to the economic impact of U.S. trade tensions.

Because understanding business today means understanding the world around it.

84 students + 12 faculty and staff = an amazing event!

We all learned something at Doing Business at Dinner.

How to give a firm handshake.
How not to hold a fork.
The importance of a first impression.

Thank you to Jean at A+ Etiquette for helping us have fun, make mistakes, and practice new skills surrounded by friends.

This event was generously supported by Enterprise and Cross Insurance Agency
