UMaine - Fogler Library Welcome to the Fogler Library fan page! Got questions? We've got answers. An official page of the The Raymond H. Come explore the world of possibility with us!

Fogler Library is one of the key intellectual focal points of the University of Maine. As the largest library in the state, we house over 1 million print volumes, and provide access to approximately 50,000 electronic journals, numerous subject databases, government documents, maps, and more. Our iconic building remains open to any and all, reflecting the cornerstone of our belief that even in a digital world, “library as place” continues to be invaluable to our many constituents.

On October 12th, we recognize Indigenous Peoples’ Day.

This day invites us to reflect on our connection to the land on which we learn, work, and gather — the homeland of the Penobscot Nation.

We honor the cultures, histories, and enduring presence of the Wabanaki Confederacy, which includes the Penobscot, Passamaquoddy, Maliseet, and Mi’kmaq Nations. Their creativity, stewardship, and resilience continue to shape and enrich our communities and the University of Maine today.

Join us for a genre-blending Halloween event featuring free food and drinks, a costume party with prizes, up-close archival curiosities from the depths of Special Collections, and an undead discussion about horror and why it mixes so frighteningly well with other genres.

Because really…what happens when horror collides with science fiction, fantasy, romance, comedy, mystery, or even children’s literature?

Together, we’ll explore the strange flexibility of horror and the many forms it can take across books, movies, television, games, and beyond.

No required reading. No homework. Bring whatever stories, characters, unsettling ideas, or things that go bump in the night you want to talk about…or ask us to ignore.

Come dressed up. Come curious. Or simply come ready to talk.

All Things Equal - The Life & Trials of Ruth Bader Ginsburg

Saturday, Sept. 26, 7 pm, Collins Center for the Arts

Supreme Court Justice “RBG” welcomes a friend of the family to her cozy chambers to convey, over the course of ninety fascinating and often funny minutes, a sense of her life and its many trials: losing her mother the day before she graduated as valedictorian of her Brooklyn high school, being one of only nine young women studying law at Harvard while also raising a daughter and helping her husband battle cancer, fighting for women’s rights in the nineteen-seventies before condescending all-male courts, and taking courageous stands for human rights as a voice of reason amid a splintering and increasingly politicized Supreme Court. It's the must-see show of the season!

Bring your scrunchies, your hankies, your humor and your heart to this entertaining and uplifting event!

Written by Tony Award-Winning playwright Rupert Holmes, Starring Michelle Azar as Ruth Bader Ginsburg, Directed by Laley Lippar

Why do we love dystopian fiction?

From Orwell and 1984 to The Hunger Games, The Matrix, Black Mirror, and beyond, dystopian stories have given us not only frightening visions of the future, but frameworks for how we understand and express the world around us.

For this month’s Book Talk, we’ll explore the appeal of dystopian fiction, the difference between dystopian and post-apocalyptic stories, and what happens when yesterday’s fictional warnings begin to feel increasingly commonplace.

Are dystopian stories predictions, warnings, mirrors or something else entirely? Can fiction influence the reality it warns us about? And if so many familiar dystopian ideas have already entered our everyday language and culture, where can the genre go next?

And, perhaps most importantly: are we living in the dystopian timeline?

Come join the conversation on Friday, September 18, from 5–7 p.m. in the Oakes Room.

No required reading. Bring whatever you’re reading, watching, playing, or thinking about.
