We're so happy to be back!

Our new Trailblazers jumped right in, and we couldn't be more excited about the year ahead. This week, Trailblazers:

🌊 Shared their interests and goals through interest surveys
🐒 Kicked off our sea turtle and beach cleanup projects
πŸŽƒ Planted pumpkins for our fall festivities
πŸŽ™οΈ Recorded peer podcasts and got to know one another
🧭 Learned the ropes from our returning Trailblazers, who presented their Insider Guides with advice, tips, and lessons they wish they knew when they were new

One of our favorite things about Trailblazer Academy is watching everyone learn from each other. Our returning Trailblazers stepped up as leaders, while our new friends brought curiosity, questions, and plenty of great ideas.

It's only week one, and they're already proving what happens when gifted learners are given the space to explore, create, collaborate, and lead.

Here's to an amazing year ahead!

Rome wasn't built in a day... but our Trailblazers did a pretty impressive job in one week!

This week, we stepped into the world of Ancient Rome to explore the engineering, mythology, politics, architecture, and innovation of one of history's greatest civilizations.

Throughout the week, Trailblazers:

πŸ›οΈ Rebuilt Ancient Rome using LEGOs, constructing amphitheaters, basilicas, temples, baths, city walls, aqueducts, and other iconic landmarks while learning how Roman cities were carefully planned and engineered.

🐺 Retold the legendary story of Romulus and Remus, then transformed the tale into original comic strips.

πŸ‘‘ Crafted togas and laurel crowns, then wore them as we held a mock trial of Romulus, debating whether the legendary founder should be celebrated - or convicted!

πŸ“œ Reimagined history by asking one fascinating question: What if Julius Caesar had received a pat on the back instead of a dagger? We wrote our own ending, then built our own staging and props, then performed our original play!

βš”οΈ Competed in our own "Gladiator Games," solving Roman mythology puzzles, cracking Caesar ciphers, and escaping a series of challenges that tested both teamwork and problem solving.

πŸ’§ Designed and built a functional aqueduct that successfully transported water across a 10-foot span to irrigate our plants.

🧱 Experimented with Roman concrete, discovering why structures built nearly 2,000 years ago are still standing today.

🎨 Created beautiful Roman-style tile mosaics, combining mathematics, symmetry, and artistic design just as Roman craftsmen did centuries ago.

Throughout the week, Trailblazers discovered that Rome's greatest legacy wasn't just its empire - it was its ability to solve problems through engineering, innovation, law, and collaboration.

Next week, we will blast off during Mission: Moon – Exploration, Engineering & Lunar Discovery, where they'll investigate gravity, rockets, lunar science, and the engineering behind humanity's greatest journeys into space.

Nature is full of incredible engineers - and this week, our Trailblazers discovered why!

During Amazing Animals: Survival of the Smartest, we investigated how animals have evolved to survive, compete, and thrive in environments all over the world. Through engineering challenges, scientific investigations, and creative projects, they learned that every adaptation has a purpose.

Throughout the week, Trailblazers:

πŸ¦… Explored the amazing world of birds by engineering and testing wing designs, 3D printing bird whistles, testing "beaks" to determine which were best adapted for various food sources, and building bird feet specialized for different habitats and lifestyles.

🐠 Dove beneath the surface to study fish, performing an original play complete with kid-made props and costumes. They also created beautiful ocean scenes using oil pastels and Cricut-cut fish inspired by the diversity of sea life.

🦎 Investigated reptiles by designing and building new LEGO hides for our resident leopard geckos, then put their problem-solving skills to good use to reduce human-alligator conflicts while keeping both people and wildlife safe.

🐸 Learned about amphibians and the remarkable regenerative abilities of axolotls by exploring how some animals can regrow lost body parts.

🦁 Examined mammals by combining characteristics from different species to design entirely new animals.

❓Wrapped up the week with a game of Jeopardy!, reviewing everything from camouflage and ecosystems to animal intelligence and adaptation.

Throughout the week, Trailblazers weren't just learning facts about animals - they were thinking like scientists, engineers, and conservationists.

Next week, we will explore Ancient Rome - engineering, mythology, architecture, imperialism, and the innovations that continue to influence our world today. Expect hands-on builds, historical simulations, creative challenges, and plenty of opportunities to think like ancient engineers and leaders.

β™ŸοΈCheckmate!β™ŸοΈ

This week, our Trailblazers discovered that success isn't about luck - it's about strategy. They learned how to think several moves ahead, calculate risk, recognize patterns, and make informed decisions instead of simply hoping things work out.

Our Trailblazers:

🎲 Investigated probability through dice rolls and experiments, comparing probabilities to real-world results while learning why randomness isn't always as random as it seems.

β™ŸοΈ Learned the fundamentals of chess, from how each piece moves to openings, defenses, tactical combinations, and long-term strategy before putting their skills to the test in a chess tournament.

πŸ•΅οΈ Developed skills in deduction, deception, and sabotage through Sudoku, Arithmagons, Cryptoquotes, Mastermind, and Clue, learning how to eliminate possibilities, identify patterns, and outthink their opponents.

🀝 Explored game theory through famous thought experiments like the Prisoner's Dilemma and the Monty Hall Problem, discovering how human decision-making often differs from mathematical expectation.

πŸ’Ό Tested their appetite for risk by playing Deal or No Deal, learning about expected value, probability, and the psychology behind making difficult choices under uncertainty.

πŸ’° Mastered all things Monopoly while analyzing traditional strategies, game mechanics, probabilities, negotiation, and resource management.

❓Wrapped up the week with a spirited game of Jeopardy!, reviewing everything they had learned through friendly competition.

Our Trailblazers weren't just playing games - they were analyzing systems, anticipating outcomes, adapting to changing situations, and making intentional decisions.

Next week, we'll explore Amazing Animals: Survival of the Smartest, where Trailblazers will investigate animal adaptations, ecosystems, predator-prey relationships, and the remarkable intelligence found throughout the natural world through hands-on activities and real-world case studies.
