Outdoor activities have always been critical to child development, I don’t think anybody would disagree with that idea.
We recognize the importance of being outside for physical activity, socialization, fresh air, and sunshine, and we designed our daily schedule and curriculum with that in mind; our students have two 30 minute recess periods per day, clubs such as Pickleball, CrossFit, snorkeling, rock climbing, etc., and up to eight field trips per class.
In particular, middle school student traditionally have no recess, and unless they’re enrolled in PE, no outdoor activity. It’s safe to say the physical, mental, and emotional benefits of being outside dramatically, increase their ability to focus and learn in school.
Schools are cutting back on recess. Pediatricians say the lost playtime can hurt kids. Click the link in the comments for more on new guidance.
