Grover had a very important request: please don’t turn the page.

Ms. Lynn’s class welcomed a special reader Mr. Scott, Landan's Dad for The Monster at the End of This Book. It is such a good read-aloud for young children: they can follow the pictures, listen to Grover’s increasingly worried words, and wonder what will happen when the next page turns.

Thank you to our guest for spending time with our young readers, and to Ms. Monica for capturing the visit. Visits like this give children another reason to look forward to a book.

READ IT. DRAW IT. EXPLAIN IT. 📖✏️

Close reading becomes much more meaningful when students can show their understanding in several different ways.

In Ms. Jordan’s ELA group, students worked with leveled readers chosen to meet them where they are. They previewed the texts, made predictions, explored new vocabulary, read with purpose, and completed activities connected to important details and story elements.

Some students used words and illustrations to build an A–Z vocabulary page. Others recorded ideas from *Frog Is Hungry* and discussed what the text and pictures revealed together. Partner work gave students space to sound out unfamiliar words, compare ideas, and explain their thinking before writing.

These activities strengthen much more than comprehension. Students practice fluent reading, vocabulary, written expression, careful listening, and the confidence to say, “Here is what I noticed—and here is the evidence.”

Different readers may need different pathways, but every learner deserves work that is appropriately challenging and a teacher who celebrates the next step forward. 💛

BEFORE FACTS BECOME FAST, THEY NEED TO MAKE SENSE ✖️

Ms. Julie’s and Ms. Jordan's learners began their multiplication journey by building meaning—not simply memorizing answers with the help of Ms. Monica as well.

Students explored multiplication as equal groups and matched different representations of the same fact. They looked for patterns in the 0, 1, 2, 5, and 10 times tables, practiced skip counting, and worked with partners through games and matching challenges.

The goal is twofold: children need to understand what multiplication represents, and they eventually need to recall facts efficiently. Hands-on models and visual matches build the concept first; repeated games, movement, and partner practice help fluency follow naturally.

We especially loved the excitement when a pair found the correct match or recognized a pattern independently. Those joyful “I see it!” moments are where new skills begin to stick.

Strong multiplication fluency is built one meaningful pattern at a time—and this group is off to a fantastic start! 🌟

PERIMETER WITH A PULSE 📐⚡

Mr. Bryan’s math group took area and perimeter beyond the worksheet with an interactive challenge that kept every student thinking, answering, and explaining.

Students strengthened the essential difference between perimeter—the distance around a figure—and area—the space inside it. They applied formulas to rectangles, worked through composite shapes, checked calculations, and used digital questions to receive immediate feedback.

The fast pace made the lesson exciting, but speed was never the real goal. Students had to decide which measurement the problem required, choose a strategy, and explain the reasoning behind an answer. When responses differed, the group revisited the dimensions and worked together to find where the thinking changed.

That combination of energy, conversation, and mathematical reasoning is powerful. The answer matters—but understanding why it works is what builds a confident mathematician. Great work, Mr. Bryan’s crew! 🙌

YOUR PASSPORT TO THE ROMAN REPUBLIC 🏛️🗺️

Today Ms. Monica's Social Studies mission sent our older learners back in time to investigate how the Roman Republic worked—and they had the passports to prove it!

Students moved through source material, mission pages, vocabulary, and written notes as they explored ideas including the Senate, consuls, citizens, civic duty, veto power, checks and balances, and separation of powers. Rather than memorizing a list of definitions, they used context and evidence to understand how authority was shared and how citizens participated in a republic.

The room was full of discussion, careful reading, and moments when the connections began to click. Students were not only learning about ancient Rome; they were building the background knowledge needed to recognize how ideas from earlier governments influenced systems that came later.

September is Social Studies Month at Academic Oasis, and this was exactly the kind of history learning we love: active, thoughtful, and filled with discovery. Mission accomplished! ✅

From Observation to Abstraction 🖼️

Our grades 5–8 artists explored what happens when recognizable shapes, overlapping lines, pattern, and color are rearranged into something entirely new.

They worked through multiple layers, balanced busy areas with open space, and made deliberate choices about contrast and movement. Abstract work may look free, but it asks students to plan, revise, and trust their own visual voice.

Geography is not just finding a place on a map. It is understanding what makes that place matter.

Ms. Susie and Mr. Bryan’s students worked with the Five Themes of Geography—location, place, human-environment interaction, movement, and region—to organize information and discuss how people and places shape one another.

As Social Studies Month continues at Academic Oasis, our learners are building the vocabulary and perspective to look beyond “where” and begin asking “why.”

A Cause, an Effect, and a Bigger Story 📚

While reading *The Tenth Mistake of Hank Hooperman*, Ms. Susie’s students slowed down to trace how one event leads to another.

They paired independent reading with partner discussion, collected unfamiliar vocabulary, and charted cause-and-effect relationships from the story. That combination helps students move beyond simply recalling the plot and begin examining why characters act, react, and change.

Novel study becomes powerful when students realize that every detail can help them understand the bigger story.

Word Parts in Action ✂️📖

Prefixes and suffixes can feel abstract—until students can move, sort, build, and use them.

Ms. Jordan’s learners turned word study into a hands-on experience. They cut and organized word parts, built new words, read together, and worked in small groups where questions could be answered right away.

When children understand how a prefix or suffix changes meaning, they gain a strategy they can carry into unfamiliar vocabulary, stronger reading comprehension, and more confident writing.

The $25 Million Hotel Challenge 🏨💡

What would you build with $25 million—and how would you prove that the numbers work?

In Mr. Gary and Ms. Monica’s project block, students stepped into the roles of developers, architects, and financial planners. They worked with ratios, budgets, construction choices, amenities, hotel descriptions, and branding while staying within a fixed project budget.

A challenge like this asks students to do far more than calculate. They must make decisions, defend priorities, revise, and turn a big idea into a plan that could actually work.
