Today was International Coastal Clean-Up Day and our UCF undergraduate Marine Conservation & Restoration class helped by removing trash from Mosquito Lagoon waters. We collected all the expected types of trash, heavy on styrofoam single-use food containers. It would be great if these containers were banned in Florida as the little beads that create all styrofoam items can be inhaled by humans, other wildlife, and consumed by filter-feeders like oysters. Thanks Florida CCA for the buckets!

Sunday, 13 September 2026 marked our 18th UCF Mangrove K-12 Educators Workshop. Marine Discovery Center in New Smyrna Beach kindly hosted us. After an hour of mangrove talk, we were treated to tours of the property, both inside to see the animals in tanks, and outside to see the property that used to be NSB High School sports fields and parking lots, and is now again marsh and Mosquito Lagoon. All of our 30 educators (representing 5 counties & 20 schools) next received all the materials that they need to grow mangroves with their classes for the 2026-2027 academic year. UCF's CEELAB then cares for the seedlings for another 2+ years, followed by deployment for coastal protection through living shorelines. Thanks everyone for a great day!

Our mangrove gardening team this past Friday was mighty, but there is a lot more to do! We will be gardening this week on UCF campus on Wednesday from 10 - 11:30 AM and Friday from 3 - 4:30 PM. Email Dr. Walters for more information and a waiver. Thanks!

Congrats to Emma and all co-authors on your newly published article on microplastics in feral vs domestic cats! Not a normal CEELAB topic, but really good addition to the literature!

Hi folks, Mangrove gardening on UCF campus resumes this week! Our nursery is located behind the Biology Field Research Building on Ara Drive. Times for the fall will be Wednesdays from 10:00 - 11:30 AM and Fridays from 3:00 - 4:30 PM. Lots of transplanting and weeding to be accomplished. To participate, please email Dr. Walters at [email protected] for a volunteer waiver. Plan to wear clothes and shoes that will get dirty/wet and bring a full water bottle plus sunscreen/insect repellant.
All plants will be used for coastal shoreline stabilization projects in the spring of 2027!
