Dr. Lisa Chambers' Aquatic Biogeochemistry Laboratory at the University of Central Florida
Biogeochemistry is the study of chemical cycles occuring in the natural environment that:
a) are mediated by biota (typically bacteria and other micmicroorganisms), and/or
b) directly impact biota as macro-elements for life (carbon, nitrogen, phosphorus, etc.) Biogeochemistry is an interdisciplinary field that requires a knowledge of biology, chemistry, geology, and hydrology. Here at the ABL, w

Congratulations Mercedes!!
We are thrilled to share that Mercedes Pinzon Delgado has been awarded a Short-Term Fellowship from the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute (STRI) to conduct research on mangrove soils in Panama this summer!
Her project — “Quantifying Stable Soil Carbon Pools Across Hydrogeomorphic Gradients in Panamanian Mangrove Forests” — explores how carbon is stabilized and stored in mangrove soils across different coastal environments. She be separating soil organic matter into particulate and mineral-associated fractions to understand how much carbon is locked away in long-lived, stable pools that can persist for centuries.
During her three-month residency at STRI, Delgado will be collecting soil cores from mangrove forests on both the Pacific and Caribbean coasts of Panama, where tidal patterns, hydrodynamics, and soil types vary dramatically. By comparing these contrasting ecosystems, her goal is to identify the environmental conditions that best support long-term carbon storage in mangrove soils.
This work will contribute to our growing understanding of blue carbon and the vital role tropical coastal wetlands play as powerful, natural carbon sinks.
Congratulations Mercedes!

The ABL represented at the GTMNERR State of the Reserve conference last week with one talk and three posters.
We are grateful to research the coastal wetlands of the GTM with so many great colleagues and collaborators!

Just released! Congrats Naija, Cadie, Sara, and Megan!
New journal article alert. Anyone involved in coastal restoration should check it out to learn more about unintended consequences of plastic and non-plastic materials. Thanks.
