Today, STEAM Teams traveled to Ring of Fire Restaurant 🔥 on Believe It or Not Island at Foreign Language Immersion School. They learned about Pacific Ring of Fire, the continent of Asia, and the country of Japan. They discovered the role of tectonic plates in the formation of earthquakes and volcanoes. Next, they put on their sushi chef hachimakis, used creativity and artistic skills to create pretend sushi, and put them inside their own take-home containers. Finally, they used chemical reactions to make Ring of Fire slime that they also got to take home.

Lesson 2: Elephant Bridge 🐘: Today at Watermark Homeschool Enrichment, STEAM Teams learned about the construction of the Brooklyn Bridge. They also learned about P.T. Barnum and his stunt to test the bridge! Students applied a design process to solve problems in and beyond the classroom. They constructed a physical prototype: starting with plans and ideas, then using materials to build the physical model. They identified appropriate materials to solve a problem based on specific properties and characteristics (e.g. strength and flexibility). Teams then tested their design, improved it, and applied the results to redesign and improve. As always, teams used positive communication and social skills to interact effectively with others throughout the process and understand other points of view and perspectives. We had an awesome time at Challenge Island!

Yesterday, STEAM Teams traveled to Spectacular Skateboard Park 🛹 on Believe It or Not Island at Foreign Language Immersion School. They learned about skateboarding, its recent status as an Olympic sport, and Chowder – the famous skateboarding dog. Then they collaborated and used creativity to design and build a model skateboard park for their community, which doubled as a perfect fingerboard park.

Yesterday was an exciting kick-off to our STEAM Enrichment Program: Animal Island at Watermark Homeschool Enrichment – North Campus! This wildly popular island has STEAM Teams engineering their way through the diverse habitats of the animal kingdom.

Lesson 1: Jellyfish Junction 🪼: Teams learned about what a jellyfish is and how it lives, and determined whether the mixing of two or more substances results in new substances. They also learned the properties of slime as a polymer and non-Newtonian fluid. They practiced their public speaking and communication skills when presenting their jellyfish slime and conclusions to the class. As always, they applied social-emotional skills, while collaborating in the scientific process. We had an awesome time at Challenge Island!
