This is where it starts. Not marksmanship tricks. Not competition prep. Real defensive shooting fundamentals built for real life — grip, drawstroke, recoil control, and accurate hits under pressure.

The pistol you carry doesn't know the difference between someone who trains and someone who doesn't. The threat you may face doesn't either.

Most problems on the range trace back to one thing: grip.

Not stance. Not trigger control. Not your sights.

Your grip is the foundation everything else is built on — and if it's off, everything downstream suffers. Here's what we drill:

— HIGH AND TIGHT. Your strong hand should sit as high on the backstrap as the gun allows. Every millimeter of gap is leverage you're giving the gun.

— SUPPORT HAND DOES THE WORK. 60–70% of your grip pressure should come from the non-dominant hand. Most people have this backwards, then wonder why the gun is moving under recoil.

— SET IT BEFORE THE DRAW IS COMPLETE. Grip should be established as the gun clears the holster — not adjusted mid-presentation. By the time it's up, it should already be right.

A solid grip means less muzzle flip, faster follow-through, and better consistency under pressure. There's no shortcut around it.

We work grip mechanics in every course — starting in Practical Pistol 1.0 and carrying forward through every level of training. It is never too basic to practice. It is the first thing we check and the last thing that fails a good shooter.
