When your child tells you something personal-a mistake, a fear, a crush, or something they’re struggling with they’re not just sharing information. They’re testing whether you are a safe place.

If that private moment is later repeated to family, joked about, brought up during an argument, or used to embarrass them, the lesson they learn is simple: “I can’t trust you with the truth.”

And once that door closes, you may only hear the edited version of their life the version they believe won’t be used against them.

Protect what they share. Correct them without humiliating them. If you’re upset, address the behavior without turning their vulnerability into ammunition. And if something must be shared for their safety, explain why and involve only the people who truly need to know.

You don’t have to approve of every choice to remain someone they can come to. Handle the small truths with care, and they’re more likely to bring you the big ones.
