This session will focus on the basics of playing bass in a swing style. It will also focus on the role of the bass in a jazz ensemble and the important relationship it has with the drummer. Learn how to set your bass to produce the best tone on your electric bass.

How to Turn the Rocker into a Jazzer
Presenter: Jeremy Langford

The drummer plays an important role in the jazz band. Learn to use simple techniques to help convert that rock drummer in your class into a swinging machine. Don’t have a drum set, then set up your books, pots and pans, or whatever you can come up with to learn how to be that swing machine. The session will conclude with a Q&A with Mr. Langford.

With funding and delivery changes that are certain to change how our programs operate on the horizon, the relevance of and advocacy for our programs - and profession - in our school communities will be paramount. A panel of Florida directors whose programs represent some of the best-supported in their communities will present a session of program advocacy resources and strategies that have found success in promoting and communicating the relevance of their band programs. The goal of this session is to inspire advocacy strategies for every band program size and setting across our state that you can adapt to use for your unique program.
