It is so important as professionals working in this field to always think ahead! Forward thinking is a critical part of the therapy we should be providing!

Today’s training focused on strengthening both clinical skills and empathy in practice. Jen led a session on identifying verbal operants and effectively running discrete trial trainings. Therapists practiced recognizing the operants being targeted in sessions and how intentional use of these strategies supports the development of functional verbal language.
Daniel and Kianna facilitated an experiential activity that highlighted what overstimulation can feel like for our clients. Through exposure to fluctuating lights, loud sounds, and continuous demands, therapists gained a deeper understanding of the sensory challenges many individuals face.
Daniel also provided an overview of common comorbidities associated with ASD, reviewing key characteristics and how they may present in sessions. Kianna emphasized the importance of AAC devices, guiding therapists through a charades-style activity where communication was limited—no words, pointing, ASL, or context—demonstrating how challenging it can be to express needs without appropriate supports.
Kianna also illustrated the importance of clear and concise instructions through a hands-on activity of making a PB&J sandwich based strictly on therapist directions. This exercise reinforced how precise communication directly impacts outcomes.
Overall, the training provided valuable insight into both the technical and human aspects of our work, reinforcing the importance of intentional teaching, empathy, and effective communication.

We love these important social stories for our friends who communicate with an AAC device.

During parachute play, we can work on skills like shared engagement, joint attention, requesting (more, stop, go, etc), and can help with sensory input. Today, we built a fort with blankets and chairs, and then the therapists were using the parachute over the fort for the kids. They all had so much fun!
For part of fun Friday, our kiddos did an obstacle course, as demonstrated by Mr. Gabe. Obstacle courses help with skills like attending, sequencing, imitating actions, waiting their turn, joint attention, following group directions, and working memory (remembering multiple steps). This is a great way to make learning fun!

Happy 15-Year Anniversary of The Pieces Fit Interventions to Jen and Anthony! 🎉
Fifteen years of dedication, growth, and impact is something truly worth celebrating. Jen, your journey began after nearly 20 years as a special needs teacher, where you saw firsthand that so many of your students needed more individualized support. You recognized how behavior could impact learning and create barriers to developing new skills—and instead of accepting that, you took action. Opening the clinic was more than a career move; it was a mission to give children and families the support they truly deserved.
Together, you and Anthony have built something incredibly special. Your dedication to the families you serve and your unwavering work ethic are what shaped the clinic into what it is today. Because of you and your staff, so many children have gained skills, confidence, and opportunities they might not have otherwise had.
The impact you’ve made goes far beyond the walls of the clinic—you’ve changed the lives of countless families, offering guidance, hope, and meaningful progress along the way. That kind of impact doesn’t happen by chance; it comes from passion, commitment, and heart.
We are so lucky to have leaders like you. Thank you for 15 years of inspiring work and for everything you continue to do each and every day. Here’s to many more years of changing lives! 💙
