The Use of Medical Gloves in General Public to Prevent the Spread of Infection or Illness
Medical gloves are considered Personal Protective Equipment (PPE) and are used to protect the wearer from the spread of infection or illness. Gloves should be used when hands may touch body fluids (such as blood, respiratory secretions, vomit, urine or f***s), certain hazardous drugs, or potentially contaminated items.
Medical gloves are only one part of an infection-control strategy as simply wearing gloves for personal protection can still be a significant source for hand-to-surface cross-contamination. Proper use, removal, and hand washing techniques, as well as knowing how to properly dispose of used gloves, is important to reduce the chance of cross-contamination of items others will handle. For example, wearing gloves in a grocery store, touching of various items, and moving on to other areas without following proper sanitation procedures can lead to cross-contamination. This is also true with gloves contaminated by inappropriate handling and storage.
The proper removal of gloves is also extremely important in preventing cross-contamination. Once removed, the thorough washing of hands for at least 20 seconds with soap and water will help round out your infection-control strategy.
Gloves should be disposed of in a medical waste container or bio-hazard bag. If these are not available at the time of disposal, gloves should be removed using the proper removal technique and then placed in a plastic bag and trash receptacle. THEY SHOULD NOT BE TOSSED ON THE GROUND IN A PARKING LOT..
What you should know before using medical gloves
• Wash your hands before putting gloves on.
• Make sure gloves fit properly and comfortably.
• Be aware of sharp objects that can puncture the gloves.
• Always change your gloves if they rip or tear.
• After removing gloves, wash your hands thoroughly with soap and water. If not available, use an alcohol-based hand sanitizer until you can wash your hands.
• Never reuse medical gloves.
• Never wash or disinfect medical gloves.
• Never share medical gloves with other users.
• PROPERLY DISPOSE OF GLOVES ONCE REMOVED.
