The point isn’t that Debbie Wasserman Schultz is a bad person or a bad political leader. The issue is representation.

In a state where nearly 3.8 million Black people live, Black representation matters. When a predominantly Black district is represented by someone who does not share that lived experience, it raises an important question about who gets a seat at the table and whose voices are being heard.

Black communities deserve leaders who can not only advocate for their interests, but also understand the experiences, challenges, and perspectives that come with being Black in America.

Representation isn’t everything, but it matters.
