We need to help kids catch up - it’s not too late to work on something this important!

Students aren’t recovering from covid. Test scores are getting worse. Takeaways from new federal data on student math and reading achievement detail the long and damaging road back from the pandemic.

Teacher book pickup dates for February are out! In January, we regrouped, and gave out 1,191 books to school literacy events while we organized and restocked books. This month we are back to our regular weekly book pickup for teachers at Title I schools. Slots are available for teachers to pick up new books to give to their students to take home and own. Teachers can also pick up used books to either give out or use in a classroom library.

February dates are:

Monday, February 3 - All Grades
Wednesday, February 12 - All Grades
Thursday, February 20 - All Grades
Tuesday, February 25 - All Grades

Thanks so much to Monica Johnson and the Orange County Retired Educators Association for the donation of 771 children’s books! They are collecting books at their monthly meetings now, and amazingly this is only 2 months’ worth!

Didn’t our mother and daughter team of artists do a great job on the old metal cabinet?? It will be going out to become a Little Free Library, and we have 3 more on the way. Thank you to Erica Moulder and her daughter for this “A Book Can Be Your Ticket to Anywhere” cabinet!!

We will be there having a great time, and 20% of your purchase during that time will to to support FLY! Thanks so much to Debbie, Marley and Dominic for all of your hard work yesterday! We have such wonderful volunteers, and this group spent their afternoon unboxing, sorting, stamping, stickering and shelving books. We are still waiting for some of our new books to come in, but we are ready for our Teacher Free Book Pickup!

October dates for Teacher Free Book Pickup for Title I school teachers are available for signup!

Please sign up for a date for your grade. Note that we have 2 dates for PreK, K, and Grade 1. Most of our teachers come from these grades, so we most of our incoming books are for those grades. We still have plenty of books for older students through grade 12.

We are in downtown Winter Park, so allow for travel time to us. All times for these dates are 3pm-6pm.

October 1 - Grades 6-12
October 7 - Grades 4-5
October 15 - Grades 2-3
October 23 & 29 - PreK, K, and Grade 1

Remember to bring your bags or boxes, and if you have any used books to donate to rehome with other teachers, bring those in as well.

A teacher sent these pictures in of her reading corner. Didn't she do a great job of using books that were donated to us and sent out to delight a new classroom of children? Couple that with sending home new books with each student, and they are off to a great year!

Here is what she said, "Here are a couple of photos from the reading corner in my 2nd grade classroom at Riverside Elementary. My students enjoy reading in this spot during center time and love all of the new books!"
