Congratulations to Communication Sciences and Disorders Research Professor Richard Salvi, who was named the recipient of the Thomas F. Campbell Callier Prize in Communication Disorders at the University of Texas at Dallas! This prestigious distinction recognizes individuals for their leadership in fostering scientific advances and significant developments in the diagnosis and treatment of communication disorders.

Salvi is internationally recognized for his groundbreaking research in auditory neuroscience, spanning a range of topics including tinnitus, hyperacusis and noise-induced hearing loss. He has published 600 scientific papers and worked to translate research into clinical practice, helping establish a tinnitus treatment program and support group at the University at Buffalo, where he served as director of the Center for Hearing and Deafness for 35 years.

The award was presented at an April 28 ceremony at the University of Texas at Dallas.

Johnny Castro is graduating with a bachelor’s degree in communication sciences and disorders. 🎓

“I am a full-time employee at the UCF Center for Autism and Related Disabilities (CARD) as well as a research assistant at the Communication Technologies Research Center (CTRC), where I have made connections with professionals across the state and met so many people who are dedicated to the field of Communication Sciences and Disorders,” Castro says.

A Family’s Unlikely Journey to Become Knights 05/06/2026

A dream that began 33 years ago takes a step forward this week as mother and son, StacyAnn Castro Tapler and Johnny Castro, graduate together.

Johnny, who is graduating with a degree in communication sciences and disorders, struggles with neurological hearing loss, which has fueled his dream to pursue a career in audiology. Castro Tapler is graduating with a degree in early childhood development and education and will teach first grade, eager to celebrate every child's unique strengths and challenges.

Taking Apart the Mystery of Vocal Fatigue 05/01/2026

From childhood curiosity to cutting-edge research — Assistant Professor Hamzeh Ghasemzadeh in the School of Communication Sciences and Disorders is rethinking how we understand and protect the human voice.

Ghasemzadeh is leading NIH-funded research to solve the mystery of vocal fatigue, a common but complex issue affecting teachers, coaches, performers and more. Using AI and wearable sensors, his work is paving the way for personalized strategies to strengthen and protect voices.

CHPS partnered with the UCF Student Government - SG Disability Caucus to host UCF’s ASL Day Celebration on April 15—bringing together students, faculty and staff to connect with ASL instructors and community members over cupcakes, pizza and some fun giveaways (including limited-edition ASL ducks 🐤).

Interested in learning more? ASL courses are offered through the UCF School of Communication Sciences and Disorders, where students build receptive and expressive signing skills while gaining a deeper understanding of Deaf culture, history and language—opening the door to meaningful communication in a wide range of helping professions.
