Dr. Dvorak here :)
We've had a number of older adults participate in our study of Medical Cannabis. I am preparing a talk for an upcoming conference, and wanted to share an abstract of our findings thus far. It's worth noting that this is not the full sample, as we are still collecting data, but we were asked to provide some preliminary findings. These results are based on 84 older adults, over 1,000 days of data, with roughly 5,000 daily assessments. Results are below...
Older adults account for a disproportional amount of medical costs. Conditions such as pain, emotional distress, and malnutrition are common in this population. Treatment for these conditions has been purported by Medical Cannabis (MC). Cannabis legalization is becoming widely accepted. MC may offer an important alternative approach to treating such conditions, and may reduce polypharmacy, a significant issue in this population. Furthermore, reports indicate a growing acceptance of MC among older adults, and an increase in their use of MC as a way to treat common and persistent medical and psychiatric symptoms. However, there are several issues associated with the proliferation of MC, particularly in this population. Due to a lack of rigorous randomized control studies, the efficacy of MC remains unclear. The current study examines physical (pain, nausea, appetite) and psychiatric (trauma, anxiety, depression) symptoms before and after medical cannabis use at the momentary level in older adults (M = 61.41, SD = 2.11). Participants with medical cannabis cards were enrolled in a 15-day ecological momentary assessment study. They completed up to 6 surveys per day assessing physical and psychiatric symptoms and MC use in the moment. Data were analyzed using a multilevel latent trajectory model that examined depression, anxiety, trauma symptoms, nausea, loss of appetite, and pain across the day. The model included time of day (time), day separated by pre- and post- use (use), and an interaction of the time x use to model trajectories across the day. For every symptom, there was a significant and robust effect of medical cannabis (ps =
It’s good to see states like Maryland and Missouri recognize that Cannabis can have medical uses while also being used as a recreational substance by responsible adults. Watching these dominoes fall across the country over the last decade has been an interesting social experiment.
We currently have 4 paid research studies. The link below will take you our lab page where you can view requirements for all 4.
Active Studies Phase 1: A 20-minute online survey on factors related to cannabis use, thoughts, and emotions. This survey serves as a screening survey for Phase 2. There is no compensation for Phase 1. Â

The REALE-TIME lab is still looking for participants for a research study. We are inviting people to participate in a study on alcohol use and sociocultural factors. The purpose of this study is to observe the interaction between various sociocultural factors that individuals experience and alcohol related issues that may occur while drinking.
Based on answers in the initial screen, participants may be eligible for the second phase of our study for which they could earn up to $50. If they qualify, we will contact them.
If you have any questions about this study, please email [email protected].

The REALE-TIME Lab at the University of Central Florida is seeking adults for an online study on eating behavior, including the influence of mood or other psychological factors. This study is two parts:
Phase 1: A 20-minute survey on factors related to eating behavior, thoughts, and emotions. This survey serves as a screening survey for Phase 2. There is no compensation for Phase 1.
Phase 2: Eligible participants randomly selected from Phase 1 complete one-time 1 hour virtual lab visit via a HIPAA-secure Zoom link to confirm eligibility and a 10-day study with 1-3 minute surveys several times per day, completed via phone. It is possible that participants may be ineligible to participate in the study after the virtual lab visit. Participants in Phase 2 can earn up to $70 in Amazon gift cards for their participation in the 10-day phone survey portion of the study.
