With current events, it’s absolutely imperative that we educate the whole child. There’s never been a better time; this is crucial. Education is more than subject-based knowledge & grades. ⠀

SEC is sending the class of 2020 graduates a special congratulatory message! ⠀

Though times have changed drastically in such a short time span, be reminded of the constant changes you’ve adapted to & overcome throughout your academic careers thus far. Be reminded of the standard changes, class changes, teacher changes, principal changes, sometimes mid-year. Be reminded of the many personality types you had to adjust to, whether it was your peers, your teachers, or your administration. Be reminded of the dress codes & phone policies that you had to adhere to for the sake of law & order. Be reminded of the many teaching styles you were forced to adapt to for the sake of your grades. We live in a society where it’s true: the only thing constant is change. However, there’s something else that’s true: change doesn’t hinder or break you; it defines you. It reveals your character & displays the grit you were born with. You’ve proven it time & time again, both in & out of school. Prove it now. Allow these times to define you, strengthen you, & reveal what good you have to offer society. Operate in & with faith, endurance, hope, & good will. Know that all the good you do will return unto you, even now. Congratulations class of 2020! Job well done! Now SOAR! ⠀

Being a parent, hearing from lots of parents, & scrolling social media, one thing is clear: distance learning has exhausted parents! It’s also brought out the strength & grit that is only found in parents. Some parents are working full-time, while having to now find childcare & a way to teach full-time. Others are dealing with job loss & trying to stay afloat. Some parents have multiple school-aged children and only one digital device. Others have no digital device or internet access. Some are fortunate enough to be a stay-at-home parent and/or afford to hire a tutor. Others are single parents who can’t afford gas to go retrieve the school meals being given out at local schools.

Meanwhile, many students have been assigned fully developed, standard-based lesson plans that outline ELA, Math, Science, & Social Studies. These are all core subjects that are typically tied to some form of high-stakes testing. These are all subjects that teachers have gone to school and/or completed exams to be certified to teach.

Parents, when it becomes unbearable & all else fails, simply have your child read a book! Here’s a list of a few resources that you may use to help your child access free reading materials:

* OxfordOwl.co.uk: free Ebook & Audiobook Library for ages 3-11; signup required (no cost/no card)
* GetEpic.com: free to students through June 30th (reach out to your child’s teacher for the sign-up information OR do the 30 day free trial for parents). 12 & Under.
* OpenLibrary.org: free Ebook & Audiobook Library for K-12; includes a plethora of classics; no signup required.

If you have questions, or need help accessing/finding resources, please reach out! We’re in this together!
