Cinco de Mayo commemorates the Mexican army’s unexpected victory over French forces at the Battle of Puebla on May 5, 1862. Led by General Ignacio Zaragoza, the outnumbered and poorly equipped Mexican troops successfully defended the city of Puebla against one of the most powerful armies in the world at the time.
Although Cinco de Mayo is often mistaken for Mexico’s Independence Day (which is actually celebrated on September 16), the holiday instead represents a powerful symbol of resistance, unity, and national pride in the face of foreign intervention.
In Mexico, the day is considered a relatively minor holiday, observed mainly in the state of Puebla. However, in the United States, it has grown into a major celebration of Mexican-American culture, featuring festivals, music, food, and community events that honor Mexican heritage and history. 🇲🇽
