Big news—and an even bigger voice and talent! 🎶✨🐝 
 
My dear friend Dr. Jon Batiste joins SCAD as founding director of our new B.F.A. in vocal performance! Eight-time Grammy, Academy, and Emmy Award winner, Jon shares his boundless musical virtuosity, deep humanity, and joyful charisma with the Hive.

Next stop: Vienna. 🇦🇹✨

A few highlights from my time in this remarkable city, from grand museums and historic libraries to magical Mozart, and some very memorable meals.

🎨 At the Kunsthistorisches Museum, I wandered through magnificent Habsburg collections and masterpieces spanning centuries.

💎 At the MAK, I discovered GLANZSTÜCKE, bringing Van Cleef & Arpels high jewelry into conversation with the museum’s extraordinary collection of art and design.

📚 The Austrian National Library was breathtaking, especially its magnificent Baroque State Hall.

🍰 No visit to Vienna would be complete without stopping at Demel, the legendary confectioner dating back to 1786. Sisi was particularly fond of their famous candied violets. 💜

🎻 And at the historic Sala Terrena, I experienced an intimate evening of Mozart chamber music.

Add in an authentic Viennese meal at Zum weißen Rauchfangkehrer and a wonderful evening at Cantinetta Antinori for the best dinner.

Maison 79: This formerly uninhabitable (roofless!) structure of centuries past now shines as a glittering gem in SCAD Lacoste’s diadem. ✨
  
The four-story Provençal sanctuary—rescued from ruin and meticulously rehabilitated with SCAD’s expertise and elán—honors the year our first Bees arrived on campus in our very first year of operation. Today, Maison 79 serves as a guest house for SCAD faculty, staff, and guests: a beacon of history and hospitality in our village devoted to the arts.  
 
From ruin to reverie, Maison 79 stands as a love letter to legacy, to light, and to SCAD Lacoste. 🇫🇷💛

From valedictorian to L’Oréal! 💄✨🐝 SCAD’s 2026 valedictorian Jackie Maciuszek (B.F.A., beauty and fragrance, 2026) turned her passion for beauty and storytelling into a blushing new career, after being hand-selected during a SCAD portfolio review for a position on L’Oréal’s global marketing team. 
 
At SCAD, Jackie mastered every facet of the beauty biz—product development, consumer insight, marketing, and branding—while dreaming up innovations of her own. Bravo, Jackie! 💖

Donated to SCAD in 2004, Smithfield Cottage soon earned the Historic Savannah Foundation’s Mills B. Lane Excellence in Preservation Award for our dedicated restoration of the home. 🏆✨

Designed in 1888, the house was built for Jesse Parker Williams, owner of a whole kingdom of Georgia timberland—his devotion to timber testified in the home’s many varieties, including oak, maple, and rare curly pine. Smithfield’s numerous mantelpieces
are each of a different species native to 19th-century Georgia. 🌳🌲🍁

Smithfield Cottage now serves as a SCAD guest house and welcomes visiting artists, writers, speakers, and others to enjoy its plurality of architectural styles and Victorian éclat. The interior’s original fixtures and modern pizzazz transform each room into a captivating tableau of whimsy and delight. As famed designer Juan Montoya says, “A room should never allow the eye to settle in one place. It should smile at you and create fantasy.” Smithfield Cottage embodies Montoya’s sentiment, enchanting guests with rich historical detail and eccentric charm.

Fun Fact: In 1932, Smithfield Cottage became the first house in all of Georgia to have central air conditioning installed! How cool! Would you stay here?

Last weekend, Savannah welcomed hundreds of grads home for Après SCAD, our annual alumni professional development retreat. Across studios and workshops, galleries and gathering places, our Bees prototyped, pitched, paddled, and peeked into new possibilities for their careers—reuniting with dear friends and making many new ones. Once again, our extraordinary alumni remind one another that the Hive will always be home. 💛

Another unforgettable Pre-Bee session welcomed our newest SCAD students to Savannah and Atlanta, where friendships took flight long before the first day of class. Incoming freshmen explored their new cities, connected with each other and their professors, and took the all-important step toward the professionals they are destined to bee-come. 
 
I created the SCAD Pre-Bee program because confidence grows through connection, friendships evolve into teamwork, and love for their university becomes the adventure of a lifetime. 💪

Félicitations to SCAD alumna Iggy Pickering (B.F.A., fashion, 2019), first-place winner of the Dior Alumni Challenge! Inspired by L’abeille Dorée—the golden bee—Iggy reimagined Dior’s iconic Bar jacket in her signature denim, embellishing the silhouette with stitching that traces the graceful flight paths of our beloved Bees.

Opportunities like these—where students and alumni work directly with the world’s great fashion houses—transform exhibitions like “Dior: Crafting Fashion” into extraordinary classrooms.
