The first two weeks of school tell you a lot.

If a service in your child's IEP — speech, OT, small-group instruction, anything — isn't happening by week two, that's worth noting, not worrying over.

Write down the date, what was missing, and who you spoke with.

A clear record early on makes it much easier to get things back on track if needed.

Quick advocacy tip: Read your child's IEP like a contract, not a summary.

Every service should specify how often, how long, and where it happens:

✅ '10 sessions a month of speech in a small group' is a promise you can measure.

❌ 'Speech support as needed' is not.

If you're not sure what was actually promised, that's the first thing to pin down — before you can tell whether it's being delivered.

You may have heard that special education oversight is shifting at the federal level this year — day-to-day management is moving to Health and Human Services, and civil rights enforcement is moving to the Department of Justice.

Here's the good news: your child's rights under IDEA have not changed.

A free, appropriate public education is still guaranteed.

The services in your child's IEP are still binding the day school starts.

What's changed is administrative, not legal — and the best response is the one that's always worked: stay informed, keep things in writing, and remember a state complaint is always filed with your state, not Washington.

Advocacy tip: make your first email of the year do double duty.

A warm note to your child's new teacher is a great start — and it's even better when it also names the services in the IEP and asks for written confirmation they'll begin on day one.

It may read like a courtesy, but gives you a dated record you can point back to all year.
