It’s Social Worker Appreciation Month, and today we are shining a bright light on one of our very own: Ashlee! 🌟

Ashlee’s journey at the Star Center began in 2024 as an intern. Fast forward to today, and she is making a massive impact as our Wellness Coach II. With her Master’s in Social Work (MSW) in hand and currently working toward her PPS Credential, Ashlee is a powerhouse of dedication and heart.

When we asked Ashlee to share a story about student growth, she reminded us why she does what she does:

"Every day I get to see students grow. There is always a barrier, and I have played a role in helping them not only recognize those barriers but take the steps to break them down."

This week for Social Work Appreciation Month, we are beyond proud to celebrate Mia, an At Risk Youth Specialist at the STAR Center who embodies heart, dedication, and professional growth.

Mia spends her days on the front lines, supporting our foster and homeless students. Whether she’s navigating complex resources with community partners or simply being a consistent, trustworthy presence for a student who needs to be heard, she meets every young person exactly where they are.

We asked Mia what a day in her life at work looks like and this was her response:
A day in my life at work starts by checking emails and messages from students, schools, and community partners. I work at the STAR Center supporting at-risk youth, including foster and homeless students. My day often includes meeting with students, listening to them, helping them with school, attendance, or connecting them to resources they may need. Every day, I meet students where they are at; students just need someone to talk to and whom they can trust. I try my best to be that safe and supportive person for them. I also help plan workshops and activities that teach life skills like independence, education, and preparing for the future. Every day is different, but what makes my job special is being able to support young people and remind them that someone believes in them and their potential.

The inspiration doesn't stop there. We are thrilled to announce that Mia has been accepted into a one year Master of Social Work (MSW) program! Her commitment to leveling up her skills to better serve our community is a testament to her passion.

✨ Friday at the Weekend of Wellness ✨

We’re kicking things off in Orland with a full day of connection, resources, and hands on experiences designed to support every dimension of wellness.

From 10–12 PM, join us at the Glenn County Fairgrounds for the North State Food Bank Distribution, open to all and free for everyone. Later in the afternoon, explore student and career support at the Care to Career Open House, connect with local resources at the Community Action Department table, and stop by our Plant Workshop to get your hands in the soil and grow something new.

As the evening continues, don’t miss our ticketed wellness experiences including Equine Assisted Growth Coaching, Food is Medicine, Yin Yoga, and the Binaural Beats Sound Bath. Each offering is designed to help you reconnect, recharge, and walk away feeling inspired.

There is something for everyone, whether you’re looking for practical support, mindful moments, or meaningful community connection. We cannot wait to see you there.

March is Social Work Month, and at the STAR Center, we’re taking a moment to celebrate a true pillar of our team: Angelica. 🌟

For 9 years, Angelica has been the heart and soul of our educational social work efforts. She has been the steady hand for students navigating challenges. Nearly a decade of service means she has seen students grow, overcome, and succeed.

But what makes Angelica truly remarkable is her "never stop growing" mindset. Even with years of expertise under her belt, she is currently pursuing her Master of Social Work (MSW). Balancing the demands of a full-time career with the rigors of a graduate program is no small feat.

Angelica, thank you for your nine years of dedication, your perspective, and your tireless advocacy. We are honored to have you on our team as you work toward this next professional milestone!

We asked Angelica "Why did you choose this work?"

I initially thought I would go to college to be an elementary school teacher. It was a way I thought I could give back to youth. Through a personal experience, my focus shifted to social work. The goal has and always will be to support, empower, and advocate for others the way I needed when I was a teen/young adult. I eventually got my undergraduate degree in social work and am now in the process of earning my master's degree in social work. My social work position at Glenn County Office of Education has been the perfect blend of educating and advocating. Watching youth accomplish their educational goals whether big or small has been incredibly rewarding.

Did you know that every single member of our team comes from a social work background? It’s more than just a degree on the wall for us—it’s the lens through which we view everything we do.

Each week we will feature one of our team members and highlight their contribution to our work.

Because of our roots in social work, our approach is always:

Person-Centered: We see the individual, not just the challenge.

Advocacy-Driven: We don’t just identify barriers; we work to break them down.

Empathy-Led: We lead with understanding and a commitment to social justice.

Whether we are researching, providing direct support, or developing programs, that "social work soul" is baked into our DNA. We are proud to bring these values to the STAR Center every single day.

This week we asked "the boss" of the STAR Center
What do people misunderstand about working with at risk youth?

TJ's response:
People often misunderstand working with at-risk youth, assuming they don’t care or just make bad choices, when in reality most of their behavior is based in survival, trauma, and instability. Defiance is self defense. If they're falling asleep in class, it isn't necessarily disinterest, it's exhaustion. Many of these youth have experienced broken systems, inconsistent adults, or housing insecurity, so trust doesn’t come easily. What makes the difference for these kids is the relationship and consistency of showing up, staying steady, and not giving up when there are setbacks. This work isn’t about “fixing” students, it’s about creating enough safety and belief in themselves that anything is possible.

📚TJ has worked at the STAR Center for 3 years as an At Risk Youth Program Coordinator.
He has a Masters degree in Social Work, an LCSW, a PPS Degree and 20 years of experience in the child welfare background!

🎄✨ What a night to remember! ✨🎄

Thank you to everyone who came out and everyone who helped make our Annual Holiday Party so special! We had an amazing turnout filled with laughter, connection, and holiday cheer. ❤️

A huge shoutout to Que Brava for the delicious food that everyone loved, our incredible quilt ladies for generously handing out beautiful quilts, and all who helped make sure presents and non-perishable food reached our families. 🎁🧣

From craft stations and a fun photo booth to warm meals and meaningful moments, the night was truly about community, kindness, and togetherness. We are so grateful for the support and love that filled the room.

Thank you for helping us make the holidays brighter for so many—we couldn’t do this without you! 💚✨
