This Month: Labor Costs in California Production and Economic Decisions

UCCE Agricultural Economics Advisor, Domena Agyeman will discuss the changing cost of agricultural labor and what rising labor costs mean for orchard operations. He will cover labor costs in orchard crops, including almonds, walnuts, prunes, and olives, and discuss how growers can evaluate labor-related management changes.

After the presentation, we'll open the floor to discuss issues and concerns from the field for all tree crops. Bring your questions, observations, photos and more for an open forum of growers, PCAs, industry members and farm advisors.

Good information for your garden ahead of the heat wave this week!

🌡️ Heads up, gardeners — a major heatwave is moving into parts of California this week, and your garden will feel it too.

When temperatures climb past 100°F, plants lose water faster than their roots can replace it. Expect wilting, flower drop, and even sunburned fruit on tomatoes, squash, and pumpkins.

A few things that help:
🌿 Water deeply (not just often) so moisture reaches the active root zone
🌅 Water early in the morning
🍂 Mulch to cool soil and reduce evaporation
⛱️ Temporary shade cloth for young or vulnerable plants

Tomatoes may stop setting fruit in extreme heat but often bounce back once temps moderate — don't give up on them yet!

⚠️ CONSUMER ALERT ⚠️

The Glenn County Department of Agriculture is advising residents to take precautions after invasive glassy-winged sharpshooters (GWSS) were found on grapevine shipments delivered to Costco locations in Northern California between April 21 and May 19.

This invasive pest poses a serious threat to vineyards and can also impact residential plants and landscapes.

Community cooperation is critical in helping prevent the spread of this invasive pest and protecting local agriculture.
