The 18th century French Lieutenant General, Jean-Baptiste Donatien de VIMEUR, Comte de ROCHAMBEAU - leader of France's Expédition Particulière - sent to the United States in 1780 to assist General WASHINGTON in the American War of Independence.

⚜️ The Revolution: Huntington Beach offers a wide assortment of opportunities to better understand the events of the American War for Independence. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ While at last year’s event, it was my pleasure to confer regularly with two of my historical contemporaries: His Excellency, Don Bernardo de Gálvez, & the uniquely charming Baron de Steuben - each of them excellent sources of historical information on Europe’s contributions to the cause of American independence from the British crown.

⚜️ After this year’s absence, it is our earnest desire to attend next year’s event, scheduled for 6-7 March 2027, at Huntington Beach Central Park. We hope to see you there!

⚜️ The Colonial Heritage Festival is unique in the western US for the variety of 18th century trade interpretations on display. During one of my morning walkabouts, I had the opportunity to converse with two of the ladies staffing the British laundry. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ While not shown here, they offered a fascinating presentation on period correct laundering methods. Clean laundry played an important role in personal hygiene, and thereby contributed to the operational readiness & war fighting ability of the military units they served.

⚜️ My Aide-de-camp M. de Fersen & I took a respite from the mid-day’s intense summer heat, & shared the shade with two soldiers of the British 33rd Regiment of Foot at this year’s Colonial Heritage Festival. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ Members of this famed military unit were present at Yorktown, VA, during the allied siege of October 1781. Together with their Crown Forces comrades, they defended their positions at Yorktown using the highest standards of military professionalism. Having done their utmost to discharge their duties, their eventual surrender was honourable, & without reproach.

⚜️ We are all looking forward to visiting again with our British Crown Forces counterparts during next year’s interpretive season, including the Colonial Heritage Festival. Rendez-vous 2-5 July 2027 at Scera Park in Orem, UT. We hope to see you there!

⚜️ Our efforts to portray members of the Expédition Particulière / French Expeditionary Corps of 1780-83 are rendered exponentially easier by the support of a select group of individuals. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ The effectiveness of our interpretive work relies upon our members’ shared passion for history: our collective love for this era brings our work to life. 😍 Preparations are underway to add depth to our storytelling activities for next year’s reenactment season.

⚜️ Due to the warm climate at the Colonial Heritage Festival, we do our best to resolve our business & organize our affairs prior to the temperature reaching its daily zenith. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ With our key planning tasks completed, my staff & I would enjoy morning coffee, chocolate & croissants, prior to receiving our guests at our Yorktown headquarters tent.

⚜️ At this year’s Colonial Heritage Festival, my staff & I had the opportunity to share the highlights of our Yorktown Campaign with the general public. It was our pleasure to do so during each day of the Festival, at Faneuil Hall venue. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ We thoroughly enjoyed this opportunity to interact with the public, & answer the many thoughtful questions they posed - even those pertaining to our dietary preferences. 😌

⚜️ We look forward to reprising our lecture / Q&A sessions at next year’s Colonial Heritage Festival. Rendez-vous 2-5 July 2027 at Scera Park in Orem, UT.

⚜️ Mme. la Comtesse & I were pleased to spend a brief moment with His Excellency, M. le docteur Franklin at the Sign of the Green Dragon, during this year’s Colonial Heritage Festival. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ Our visit allowed us to develop a rewed appreciation for His Excellency’s vivacious charm & wit. When his duties as ambassador ended, we deeply regretted his eventual departure from France, but wished him well as he returned home to his loved ones.

⚜️ In addition to M. Franklin, many talented individuals served skillfully in the nascent diplomatic corps of the newly formed United States of America. Visit us at next year’s Colonial Heritage Festival to learn more about this select group of individuals & their respective accomplishments. Rendez-vous 2-5 July 2027 at Scera Park in Orem, UT.

⚜️ Upon our arrival in Newport, Rhode Island in the summer of 1780, it was my earnest desire to establish regular communication with His Excellency, General Washington. The combined operations of our armies would require considerable prior planning & coordination. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ During our first several months in the United States, our ability to meet face-to-face was limited. However, once our armies united in the summer of 1781, regular meetings between General Washington, myself & our respective staff members became commonplace.

⚜️ Due to my limited knowledge of the English language, I relied heavily of the linguistic skills of my staff members, many of whom spoke English well. At the head of this group was my Aide-de-Camp, the Count von Fersen, upon whom I called regularly to assist with translation & interpretation.

⚜️ I continued to improve my English language skills during our time in North America, as well as after my return to France. This knowledge proved very useful in my continued service to my King & country.

⚜️ In October 1781, after the British surrender at Yorktown, Virginia, I was pleased to review the British defenses there, from the previously British side of the line. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ During this review, I was assisted by the gracious Lieutenant Fairfax, of the the British Crown’s 33rd Regiment of Foot, who lent me his fine optics to better appreciate the British fortifications.

⚜️ Within our camp, the 33rd RoF had a well-deserved reputation as a hard fighting, professional organization. Though brief, my staff & I enjoyed the time we spent together with these fine gentlemen in the days following Yorktown the siege.

⚜️ Little did I know that, only a few years later, I would be reunited with several of these gentlemen during a visit to London. During my stay there, a group of them received me at a generous & warmhearted reception, where we renewed our friendships as military professionals.

⚜️ We were pleased to receive the visit of His Excellency, Governor Dunmore, & Lady Charlotte Stewart Murray, Countess of Dunmore, at this year’s Colonial Heritage Festival. 🇺🇸🏳️🇪🇸🇬🇧🇱🇺🇫🇷

⚜️ Having served as Governor of the Virginia & New York colonies, the Fourth Earl of Dunmore was a highly experienced administrator of the former British colonies in North America.

⚜️ The combined insight & wit of the Earl & his Lady rendered them some of the most enjoyed guests we received. We shall not soon forget their warmth, congeniality & beautifully timed lightheartedness. We look forward to renewing their acquaintances at our next meeting.
