New students have a lot to get used to. It often helps to hear tips from more experienced students who know what's going on at UVU and have learned the ropes. Here are some ideas from some UVU students that you can share with your own student.
💚Elsa: Learn how to combine your calendars ASAP! I would also recommend figuring out quickly if you work best with a digital or physical calendar and committing to it. Also, from day one, create blocks in your calendar for 'me' time and don't let yourself fill that with anything, unless it would count as something you would naturally do in your 'me' time. It helps you stay productive even with slightly busier schedules.
💚Benjamin: Get to know your classmates! Sit next to people you don't know, ask them their name, major, and where they’re from, and later in the semester if you miss a class or need help on an assignment, you’ll have someone to talk to!
💚Emma: Join a UVU club, group, campus job or get involved in some other way. This will not only help with meeting new people, but this will help you stay motivated to go to your classes and enjoy being on campus.
💚Skyler: Don't be afraid to start over. Maybe the major you chose isn't right, the club you joined isn't a good fit, or your first group of friends changes. That's normal. College is about discovering who you are, and some of the best opportunities come after changing direction. Give yourself permission to explore and grow.
💚Cooper: Talk to your professors! Don’t be afraid to ask questions, even if you think they’re dumb or obvious. They are gonna be your greatest allies both in that class and beyond. It means a lot to them when a student shows that they’re engaged and care about the class.
