Looking for a way to enjoy the outdoors? Think about signing up for one of our project based, field-based, or CURES classes for the upcoming school year!
☀️
ENVT 3270 Environmental Microbiology and Dr Bishop’s DARC lab took a two day field trip this semester to the Great Basin sagebrush lands to collect important data on the biocrust communities. This project is part of a global initiative called CrustNet to help understand global structure and function of our biocrust communities!
☀️
Biocrusts are important communities living right beneath our feet! They help stabilize soils, cycle nutrients, store carbon, and can be helpful in preventing invasive plants from spreading. Disturbances such as climate change and wildfire have big implications for the longevity of our biocrust communities!

First weeks of school got you stressed? Yellowstone will fix that!
There are still seats available on the Yellowstone National Park Science Excursion (GEO2020R) next month! Come along with Drs. Moore and Olson to discovery more about Lake Bonneville, Pleistocene glaciation, recent earthquakes and geologic hazards, and of course the fascinating volcanic history of Yellowstone NP and the surrounding area.
This course is appropriate for students of all majors and backgrounds. Most course work will be completed while on the trip as you visit waterfalls, hot springs, and collect minerals. Come and learn Earth science in the field!
Course: GEO2020R (Section 203 or 204)
Dates: September 20-23, 2025 (Saturday-Tuesday)
Fee: Payment to OAC (Outdoor Adventure Center) of $275 which includes all costs (vehicle rentals, gas, food, campground free, park fee, and more)

Dr. Czajka, Dr. Atkins (Earth sci), and Dr. Jensen (physics) took a group of Pro-STEM students to the Capitol Reef Field Station to kick off the start of the 2025 fall semester. We had a fun mix of Geography, Environmental Science and Management, Geology, and Physics majors! The temps felt like summer but everyone is ready to tackle the fall semester.
