We were pining for an environmental service opportunity today and found a poplar one with City of Orem as part of their “Rooted in Orem” initiative to plant 30 trees at Lakeside Park.

Earth Science students and faculty joined in the effort as part of our UVU Day of Service to reciprocate appreciation for having great trees in our cities.

🌲 🔥 Fieldwork Highlight: Pinyon-Juniper Research in SE Utah

Student researchers Brooklyn Jurgens, Karla Andrade, Hali Lukacs, Adam Memmott, and Adam Phillips, as part of Dr Bishop’s DARC research lab, are hard at work collecting pinyon and juniper tree samples across southeastern Utah this season! These samples help them reconstruct the age structure of these vast woodlands, information that is critical for understanding how these ecosystems function over time.

This work has taken on new urgency: their sampling sites sit in the same landscapes now burning in the Babylon Fire near Blanding and Monticello - currently the largest active wildfire in the country. Dr Bishop aims to understand how PJ woodlands have changed over time and to integrate that information for fire and fuels treatments with her collaborators at the Bureau of Land Management.

We love the deduction of our undergraduate researchers doing this hands-on fieldwork! And we are thinking of the communities and firefighters dealing with all the active wildfires right now.

ENVT 3270 Environmental Microbiology and Dr Bishop’s DARC lab took a two day field trip this semester to the Great Basin sagebrush lands to collect important data on the biocrust communities. This project is part of a global initiative called CrustNet to help understand global structure and function of our biocrust communities!

Biocrusts are important communities living right beneath our feet! They help stabilize soils, cycle nutrients, store carbon, and can be helpful in preventing invasive plants from spreading. Disturbances such as climate change and wildfire have big implications for the longevity of our biocrust communities!

Happy MLK Day! Some of our Environmental Science and Management students found a way to beat the inversion and do some science! Jam Boyden, Hali Lukacs, Brooklyn Jurgens, Morgan Alexander, and Isabel Hoen enjoyed a field day with Dr Bishop for some biocrust research happening in the Great Basin 💚
