The most difficult student to teach is the one who knows everything. And, the most difficult teacher to learn from is the one who doesn’t provide a culture of questioning.

Creating a culture of questioning in a vocal studio is a matter of the instructor asking questions themselves. If/when the instructor asks questions, the student will follow. It’s an unspoken and often overlooked agreement in the instructor-student relationship.

Creating a culture of questioning in a vocal studio allows the vocal instructor to really know where the student is at in their understanding of their vocal work, not just how they’re doing in application.

When a student comes to their vocal instructor with questions, it means they’re sincerely interested in the answer, in greater understanding. This is an ideal place for the vocal instructor to be - the student WANTS to learn and is engaged in the learning process. How wonderful!

Questions are the gateway to greater understanding + greater empowerment.

✨When a student receives vocal feedback and they don’t fully understand the feedback they’ve received, it’s important they feel safe enough to ask questions until they do.

✨When a student is expected to do something with their voice and they don’t understand what they’re doing or why they’re doing it, it is important they feel safe enough to ask questions until they do.

✨When a student successfully/unsuccessfully does what is expected of them, but they don’t understand how they did/didn’t do it, it is important they feel safe enough to ask questions until they do.

✨If a student has *any* questions, it is important they feel safe enough to ask those questions, regardless of who they are studying with, how long they’ve been studying, how successful or unsuccessful they’ve been, etc.

Questioning is a right.

The Central Utah Chapter of The National Association of Teachers of Singing (NATS) is so excited to have a business focused workshop for chapter members *and* for members of the music/singing community (who may not be NATS members)!

We will have Janilyn Anderson and Georgia Wadsworth present to us. Each are highly experienced and equally successful vocal instructors, collegiate level and in the community. Janilyn & Georgia are bringing their hearts and their art to the table, based on their professional successes, and offering it to each of us. Their primary focus during this workshop will be "Business Strategies for Recruiting, Inspiring and Retaining Teenagers in Your Vocal Studio".

As the Activities Chair of the Central Utah Chapter, I wanted to extend an invitation to each of you to attend and benefit from this wonderful workshop.

Please respond and let me know if you would like to attend.

The human voice is vulnerable. The human voice has so much depth, emotion and psychology. Learning to sing often feels like you’re walking the path of unlearning more than you’re walking the path of learning. For this reason, learning to sing is multi-dimensional. Stepping into the vocal studio is brave because stepping into the vocal studio is all about embracing self discovery, self acceptance and self respect, Then stepping out of the studio and sharing it. It’s an empowering journey.

I will be teaching a REALLY fun and informative group voice class this semester. This class is created for beginning level students, ages 8-13. Our primary objective is to introduce, experiment, and explore healthy singing of all genres. We meet at the SCERA each Monday from 4:00-4:50 and have just a few more seats available (added bonus, tuition is half the cost of private lessons). I would love to work and sing with you!
