Diving history enthusiasts! On October 2nd the show “The Unbelievable: Encounters with Dan Aykroyd” is advertising that it will show a clip titled The World Octopus Wrestling Championship. This was an event created by the Mudsharks dive club in the early 1960’s. Both Bill High and Gary Keffler were the champions on more than one occasion! Both Bill and Gary will be in attendance at our fall conference on September 26 at the Diamond Knot Brewing in Mountlake Terrace, Washington. Check your streaming services!

On the last morning dive in the Keys we came upon a “ghost” net that had been lost by local fisherman. This was a small-ish net but contained several dead fish and several very hypoxic fish. The dive leader from Islamorada Dive Center did not hesitate to immediately begin gathering it up. With the help of the group, fish were released, the net and some other garbage was collected and placed beneath the boat to be removed at the end of the dive. As divers we always need to be good stewards of the marine environment. Leading by example like our dive master did encourages all who watch to participate. Philosophically, I believe that each day we wake up we need to decide if we are going to be part of the problem or part of the solution. I don’t think there’s any “in-between”.
