South Carolina State University’s new $50 million freshman residence hall is beginning to take shape as crews raise massive concrete wall panels into place, marking a major construction milestone for the five-story facility.

SC State President Alexander Conyers said the milestone reflects the advantages of a construction method designed to accelerate the project while maintaining the building’s structural integrity.

“I'm very excited that this process allows the university to receive the finished product in a faster time,” Conyers said. “It expedites the process while there are no shortcuts on safety or durability of the building.”

The accelerated but structurally sound construction method is expected to allow SC State freshmen to occupy the new residence hall in fall 2027.

Pack the Pantry: SC State SGA seeks donations to help students meet basic needs

The pantry is open from 1 to 6 p.m. Monday through Friday and is in the Bulldog Den, which sits beside the Lewis Building housing the university’s Department of Speech Pathology and Audiology.

South Carolina State University will temporarily close a portion of Naylor Street beginning Monday, Aug. 24, as construction progresses on the university’s new residence hall.

The closure, expected to continue through mid-October, is necessary to allow crews to erect concrete tilt wall panels for the residence hall. The closure will affect Naylor Street from the end loop of the Mitchell Hall parking lot to the intersection of Buckley and Naylor streets.

The closure will help ensure the safety of SC State students, faculty and staff, as well as Felton Laboratory Charter School students, while large concrete wall panels are lifted and set into place.
