No two days on campus are ever the same. Today we had the excitement of hosting the incoming Biological & Biomedical Sciences students for their orientation to Yale and an opportunity to tour our Institutes and meet with faculty, students and staff. Always a great day on West Campus!

“Let’s meet at the piano,” said Sean McCabe, Communications Officer at Yale School of Medicine, who stopped by this week to film The Terrace in full summer mode. Here he is taking the keys for a spin with legendary jazz pianist Dave Brubeck’s The Desert and the Parched Land (1979). Thanks for visiting, Sean!

The energy created by last week’s Undergraduate Student Research Fair will be felt for some time here on West Campus! We were blown away by our amazing students – your command of science, composure, confidence, and incredible enthusiasm are an example to us all. We can’t wait to see where you go next!

Our endless thanks to the numerous staff, mentors, uber-mentors (you know who you are) and faculty who invest everything in our students.

You can recap the event and all the photos by visiting the news story linked through our homepage.

[*Coveted YWC frisbees may be available at future campus events. You’ll just have to show up and find out 😄]

Two Yale researchers have been selected for the U.S. Department of Energy's Genesis Mission, a national initiative to accelerate scientific discovery through AI.

Physicist Sarah Demers is using AI to catch problems in particle physics data at Fermilab faster than ever before, cutting diagnosis time from hours to minutes. Molecular biologist Farren Isaacs, based at the Systems Biology Institute at Yale West Campus, is building an AI platform that can help design synthetic genomes, the instruction sets that tell cells how to function.

Their projects are among 278 selected nationwide. Read about the work: bit.ly/45hykh8

We started the week with stormy Chopin, and end with sunshine!

Our friend Tom Grim Yale University Art Gallery stopped by the Conference Center for some espresso and treated us to one of his favorite Elton John numbers (Daniel, 1973).

Aside from their day jobs, our West Campus community has crazy talent! Check back for news of a lunchtime concert, and let us know if you’d like to be on the bill!

Graduate student Eason Cao dropped by the Conference Center for some practice, capturing perfectly the mood of today’s thunderstorms with his recital of Chopin’s Ballade No.4. Eason (Cell Biology, Lin Lab, Yale Nanobiology Institute) is studying nucleocytoplasmic transport via DNA-origami-based nanopores, and plays piano “just for fun”. We are grateful to him for sharing such wonderful talent!

Remember when Han Solo was cryogenically frozen in carbonite? Yale scientists in the lab of Jun Liu have leveraged the University’s Cryogenic electron microscope (Cryo-EM) to reveal the precise shape and structure of the bacterium responsible for gum disease – a condition that affects 40% of U.S. adults. Cryo-EM is a technique used to visualize the 3D atomic structures of bacteria and viruses. By flash-freezing samples, the process preserves the natural state of the sample, allowing researchers to take high-resolution film like this one. Cracking a 50 year old puzzle, the research is expected to guide the way towards potential orthodontic treatment methods, whenever the team return from Tatooine.
