The Libraries, the Interim Provost, and the School of Medicine and UCI Medical Center Leadership have agreed that we will close the Grunigen Medical Library, including the 24/7 Research Lounge, as of Tuesday, March 17th, at 1 pm. GML plans to reopen on Monday, April 6th.
The Libraries recommended this course of action for the following reasons:
• Closing GML will allow the UCI Medical Center to focus their attention on keeping critical areas clean, such as the hospital.
• GML has a small footprint. Social distancing is difficult to achieve for patrons and library staff.
• The majority of materials needed by our clinical faculty and nurses are now available online. See https://grunigen.lib.uci.edu/core-resources for a list of many core resources.
• Reference service is available online, including connecting with the health science librarians via Zoom for consultations.
For more information about the Libraries’ virtual services and collections, please see https://www.lib.uci.edu/remote-resources
If you have an item checked out from GML:
If an item is due and you are unable to renew it online, please keep it until you may safely return it to GML. We understand that this is a special situation, and special considerations will be made to ensure there are no fines due to GML’s closure.
Please do not return laptops via the book returns. Instead, please return any equipment to the GML service desk the next time we are open and we will amend any fines.
