Explore, experiment, and find your path in healthcare 🩺 🐾❤️

Those were the key themes from last weekend’s Homecoming Masterclass panel, “From Schmid to Scrubs: Chapman Alumni Making an Impact in Healthcare,” featuring our Pre-Health Advisor Randy Zuniga alongside our Schmid alumni Adam Kalawi and Emily Cauble!

During their time at Chapman, Adam was a Biochemistry & Molecular Biology major, and Emily was a Biological Sciences major. After graduating from Chapman in 2014, Adam earned his Ph.D. from the University of California, Irvine, and is now a Pediatric Neurologist at Rady Children’s Health, formerly the Children’s Hospital of Orange County (CHOC). After Emily graduated in 2019, she continued to dive into research and became a Research Associate at City of Hope, where she analyzes data to better understand the relationship between environmental exposures and disease. Cauble is also currently pursuing a Ph.D. in Health Promotion Sciences from Claremont Graduate University.

Our panelists discussed the different paths in healthcare available to students who know they want to commit their lives to serving others but are unsure how best to use their skills and passions. One of the key messages shared by our panelists was that undergraduate students should engage in experiences to learn about new pathways they might not even have known existed. Career trajectories can and should pivot as you continue to learn and hone your skillsets, and the best thing that students can do is experiment with new experiences in research and professional settings to learn what area of healthcare they enjoy working in.

🔬 A tale of two summers, two labs, and two undergrads doing research that will have a real impact on our world! 
This summer, more than 50 Schmid College undergrads traded textbooks for lab coats as they joined our Summer Research programs (SURF, SSRF, SFJ, Beckman Scholars & SURFEES).
🧬 Jolie Evans ‘28 spent her summer in Dr. Cedric Owens’ lab studying nitrogenase, an enzyme that is vital to plant life and is needed in large quantities in the agricultural industry.
🎗️ Anja Weiss ‘28 dove into breast cancer research in Dr. Cecilia Lopez and Dr. Marco Bisoffi’s lab, studying how cancer cells develop treatment resistance.
Both are pre-med and started zero lab experience not too long ago. And now both are proof that undergrads at Schmid aren’t just taking notes but are learning the skills to run their own projects, present their own posters, and create tangible outputs that are shaping our world.
This is what undergraduate research at Chapman University looks like. 🐾

NASA has awarded Dr. Joshua Fisher, associate professor of environmental science at Schmid College, two grants to fund groundbreaking research using data from the International Space Station (ISS).

Dr. Fisher's first project tracks ecosystem complexity and biodiversity from space, utilizing cutting-edge satellite and ISS technology to support global conservation efforts. His second project, in partnership with international experts, is developing a famine early-warning system that uses remote sensing and AI to predict food crises months before they hit.

These projects not only advance climate science and global humanitarian work but also offer students at Chapman University unique hands-on research opportunities at the intersection of technology and environmental science.
