💀🍊FROM GRIEF TO THE GRAVE, EXPLORING VICTORIAN DEATH CULTURE

🪦Venture through the veil to explore how superstition, customs and rituals defined the Victorian death culture.

⚰️We cordially invite you to an evening at the historic Masonic lodge of Old Towne Orange (rumored to be haunted!) with historian, death scholar, paranormal expert and ghost hostess (with Haunted Orange County) Darcy Staniforth bringing us this special program on Victorian Death Culture. While modern Americans might shy away from talking about death, grief, and loss, the Victorians were immersed in it. From the clothes and jewelry they wore, the way they decorated their houses, to picnicking among the dead, this special historical program will touch on all of that and more.

This program is a very special night of history and a chance to view inside the old Campbell Opera House, now the Masonic Lodge, all provided FREE from the Orange Community Historical Society in partnership with Haunted Orange County Ghost Tours, the Orange Grove Lodge F&AM #293 Orange Grove Lodge #293 Free And Accepted Masons and Darcy Staniforth.

📣🍊FREE Opening Reception: “A Brief History of El Modena”

📆 THIS Thursday August 6th

⏰5:30 PM 6:30 PM

📍El Modena Branch Library

🤗 Exhibit information is presented in both English and Spanish, join us for refreshments and community mingling, invite everyone!

🗣️This new exhibit takes visitors on a journey from the founding of the Quaker settlement of Modena in 1885 through the improvements to El Modena championed by Jess Perez, Orange’s first Latino councilman and mayor.

The exhibit showcases photographs and artifacts from the citrus industry that attracted families, including those of Lorenzo A. Ramirez, to the growing Mexican community in El Modena.

A central highlight of the exhibit is the Ramirez family and their landmark court case, Mendez et al. v. Westminster, which ended the segregation of Mexican American students in California public schools and set a significant precedent for desegregation nationwide.

Additionally, the exhibit features an oil painting by Emigdio Vasquez along with the tools he used to paint scenes that honor Mexican American history.
