Sometimes someone else sees the opportunity you need before you do.

If there is a Muslim college student in your life who is thoughtful, curious and ready to deepen his relationship with his faith, we invite you to nominate him for Bayan Roots.

This December, approximately twenty young men will journey through Madinah, Makkah and Istanbul with Bayan scholars and one another.

Parents, professors, imams, chaplains, mentors, alumni and friends: help us find the young men who should be in this first cohort.

Leadership is strengthened when scholarship meets real-world experience.

Today, Bayan doctoral students engaged in a dynamic session with Malek Bendelhoum, CEO of Sahaba Initiative, exploring what it takes to scale organizations, navigate growth, and lead for lasting impact.

At Bayan, learning extends beyond the classroom—connecting emerging leaders with practitioners shaping institutions and communities.

In one of our classes, Dr. Umar reflected on Malcolm X’s rare courage—the willingness to re-examine his beliefs when they no longer aligned with reality, and to keep evolving with honesty and integrity.

"This was no longer just palace politics—it was a new era of power without accountability."

In this reel, Dr. Ovamir Anjum unpacks how the rise of the Mamluks—military slaves in 3rd-century Baghdad—transformed the Islamic empire.

Originally brought in to serve as elite soldiers, these men became unpredictable powerbrokers. With no loyalty after their masters died, they harassed civilians, shifted alliances, and shaped politics at the highest levels—fueling instability from within.

A gripping look at how unanchored power can reshape a civilization.

There comes a point when faith has to become your own.

College can be that point.

You encounter new ideas, new people and new ways of seeing the world. The questions you once took for granted can suddenly feel much more personal.

Bayan Roots gives Muslim college men room for those questions, alongside peers and scholars who understand both the depth of the Islamic tradition and what it means to grow up Muslim in America.

This December, the first Bayan Roots cohort begins its journey.

Madinah. Makkah. Istanbul.
December 15-24.

Applications are open. Priority deadline Oct. 18: https://hubs.la/Q04ygnm60

College changes the questions.

What do I believe? What kind of Muslim do I want to be? What parts of my faith have I inherited, and what do I need to understand for myself?

Bayan Roots was created for this reason.

This December, a small cohort of Muslim college men will travel together through Madinah, Makkah and Istanbul, guided by scholars from Bayan Graduate School.

There will be Umrah. History. Sacred places. Long conversations. New friendships. And time to ask the questions that deserve more than a quick answer.

Applications are now open for the inaugural Bayan Roots cohort.

🗣️ Raise Your Words, Not Your Voice – Imam Khalid Latif on Abuse & Prophetic Character

"The Prophet ﷺ never struck a woman, child, or servant. Ever.
Abuse—whether physical or verbal—is never acceptable in our faith. As Rumi said, 'Raise your words, not your voice.' It’s rain that helps flowers grow, not thunder."

Imam Khalid Latif reminds us that healing starts with how we speak. Let your words be a source of mercy, not harm.

How does the heart change? A brief reflection with Dr. Jihad Saafir on the parable of the heart in our Prophetic tradition.

What can anger reveal about what we value, what we fear, and what we are called to protect?

In this reflection, Dr. Ingrid Mattson invites us to look beyond anger as something simply to suppress or avoid—and instead to consider what it may be teaching us about ourselves, our relationships, and our responsibilities.

When approached with awareness and spiritual grounding, even difficult emotions can become opportunities for deeper understanding, greater self-knowledge, and more intentional action.

After years of traditional Islamic study overseas, Muhammad Elmarouk came to Bayan seeking something more: accredited scholarship rooted in tradition and engaged with the realities of Muslim life in America.

At Bayan, he found a space to be challenged academically, deepen his understanding, and prepare for meaningful service—while continuing to work and support his family.

His journey reflects what applied Islamic scholarship can look like: grounded, rigorous, and connected to the communities we serve.
