Last weekend we took a walk along the Rahway River through West Orange, Orange, and South Orange with our Roots of Division class to see the effects of redlining in our communities.

Later that day we convened at Military Park for this month's Music on Main concert. We had great vibes from our DJ Zunyda, singer Merikara, and Carlos Frias & Circulo Social.

Our Steel Band played in Orange's annual Caribbean festival and hosted a band launch at The HUUB. The adult and youth bands performed together and their joy was contagious! The Moko Jumbie stilt walkers added some extra delight and wonder.

We held our final Roots of Division class on Monday evening. We revisited photos from our river walk, revisited our maps, and heard from Doug Farrand about the ways in which our Music City program touches on Dr. Mindy Fullilove's elements of urban restoration. We ended the class with a teaser from Mia White about restorative planning that we hope to turn into future UofO courses.

Tuesday night we heard from the writers of memoir class. They shared their reflections on some of the most critical issues of our time. It was a moving evening that incorporated music with prose. Brava!
Last night we welcomed Sergio Campos to speak with us about his life's work for our autonomous spaces series. Sergio spoke with us about his homeland in El Salvador, the issues that his community there faces regularly, and how they are able to work together. Sergio has much wisdom to offer with us all about creating connections to each other, our communities, and the land we share.

Summer Session ended this morning with a Ben Jones Community Garden Volunteer Day. The team built a trellis for the sprawling watermelons among other regular harvesting, maintenance and beautifying tasks.

We are heading to the World Fellowship in the White Mountains in New Hampshire for our annual retreat. We’ll be reflecting, resting, stargazing, planning, and offering some programs about work. We look forward to seeing you in September!

Autonomous Spaces Series: Sergio Campos
Thursday, August 13th, 6:30pm-8pm
35 Cleveland Street, Orange NJ 07050
(in Sanctuary!)

Please join us as we welcome Sergio Campos for our autonomous spaces series:

My name is Sergio Campos and I am a proud Lenca descendant from a place originally known as Cuzcatlan, the land of precious stones now known as the country of El Salvador. My thirst for knowledge, connection, and curiosity started at a very young age, and my travels have brought me to many different places. I have spent years cultivating community in many communal spaces through our connection to ancestral foods, resilience, language and art traditions and continue that work here on Turtle Island and many other places like Tonacatepeque. The best thing I can do to express my love and connection to these lands is to share my knowledge and experiences while constantly learning and gaining wisdom and insight from the amazing people that I continue to meet all around me. To me, staying rooted and grounded in my traditions is a lifelong practice that constantly inspires me to connect all of us to the past, present, and future we are creating together.

UofO Summer session is in full swing next week with daily steel pan summer intensive, "Roots of Division and Struggle for Solidarity in Essex County" on Monday night, and Tuesday morning - a lecture by Jang Tae-gyu (Heritage Arche Creative Language Research Institute)
In this hands-on session, students will discover their personal creative thinking style through image and language interaction exercises. The workshop challenges us to tap into our unconscious mind — using points, lines, and shapes — to unlock the unique human imagination that AI simply cannot replicate. Come explore how creativity is already alive in your everyday life! Go to universityoforange.org to register for this class

Roots of Division and the Struggle for Solidarity in Essex County
led by Dr. Mia White, Dr. Mindy Fullilove and Molly Rose Kaufman
Mondays, July 27-August 10, 6:30pm-8pm at The HUUB
Saturday, August 8th, neighborhood walk from 10am-12pm
35 Cleveland Street, Orange, NJ

Centuries of structural dis/investment in Essex County has multiplied division and inequality in the socio-physical environment. Years of municipal neglect and infrastructure carve-ups have threatened to naturalize our differences. As a result, our communities need opportunities to remember our shared histories as one important step towards healing and reconnection. In this interactive workshop we will review policies that shaped our current environment and identify the many cultural and community assets in our region. We will ground in restoration urbanism: understanding urban fracture and the methodology of reweaving.

Last month we held a webinar on the topic of rural land loss among black farmers. There was an array of speakers including farmers and researchers, ending with a powerful performance by Janetza. It was an enlightening and moving event. The recording is now available on our website, and we are still collecting donations to send to the following organizations supporting black farmers:

National Black Food & Justice Alliance
Federation of Southern Cooperatives/Land Assistance Fund
Land Loss Prevention
