A little about our humble beginning.
In the beginning five students wanted to raise funds to provide incentive in the classroom. The students started to collect newspaper from the campus. All materials were then transported by Sean and Dane to Smurfit Recycling in Santa Ana. Sean decided that it would be a good idea to let the students in his class decide and vote on how the funds would be spent. At the first budget meeting something incredible happened. The students only spent a portion of the funds on incentives and saved the rest to improve their ability to grow the business. More of our history to come

Foothill High School’s Green Power Academy and Student Recycling Center had a fantastic grand opening of their new solar energy site located Foothill High School, 19251 Dodge Ave.
The Foothill Student Recycling Center is an award-winning nonprofit program that is run by special education students with the sole purpose of giving them the tools necessary to improve their quality of life and promote their independence. The facility is the largest recycling center on a high school campus in the United States, according to special education teacher Sean Pfaff, who oversees the program. The center, now it its 17th year, recycles between 30 to 50 tons of commercial grade paper monthly and services the needs of nearly 100 local businesses.
The Green Power Academy, in its third year under the direction of engineering and math teacher Jeff Farr, focuses on students who want to develop skills to prepare them for a career in engineering. Students in 10th through 12th grades use state-of-the-art technology to design, develop and implement solar-based projects. Recent projects include the building of an all-electric vehicle which took first place at the UCI Design Review competition and second place at the UCI Energy Invitational at Adams Motorsports Park in Riverside.
In addition, students in Foothill’s Green Power Academy are working with a local contractor on the proposal, design and installation of residential solar-power systems, with the goal of installing at least five systems this year.
During the past several months, the program has raised funds to purchase a system to convert the Foothill Student Recycling Center to run solely on solar power. The Tustin Public Schools Foundation awarded a “Go Green” grant for $15,000 and PG&E donated $10,000. In addition, the program received funding from the Foothill Education Fund, Green Power Academy and Tustin-Santa Ana Rotary Club. Balfour Beatty Construction donated its services to help the students install approximately 33 adjustable solar panels.

“We are now the only solar recycling center to operate on a high school campus in the nation,” Pfaff said.
The recycling center will also become an official e-waste site and, beginning in December, will accept computers and small household electronics.
