Recently, the Environmental Brigades team re-visited the community of Piriati Embera in Panama to complete the gathering of GPS coordinates in order to map all of the households in the community. This initiative has helped Global Brigades staff to meet and greet the community members and will assist with the surveying of environmental needs of each household. Our Environmental Brigades Program Lead also met with Marisela Garabato, the secretary of the newly-formed Environmental Youth Committee at Piriati Embera, to formulate plans for a seminar from July 27-28 designed to engage and empower community youth. The 2-day seminar will be open for 20 youth who have an interest in learning about the leadership and teamwork skills necessary to plan as well as execute environmentally sustainable projects in their community. Topics ranging from the work and background of Global Brigades, entrepreneurship, and development work will be addressed by Tania Brathwaite and Carlos Moreno, Global Brigades Program Technician. Our mission of this leadership retreat is simple - to develop leaders out of inquisitive youth in the community for the future. Their involvement in upcoming Brigades will be a valuable asset and also a component of sustainability in the program. Photos: Jonathan Lee.
