Children often assume that faster means better.
If someone earns a belt sooner, learns a technique more quickly, or performs with greater confidence, they may begin wondering:
“Why am I not there yet?”
But growth is not a race—and another person’s timeline is not the standard by which a child should measure their worth.
One student may learn quickly but struggle with patience.
Another may need more practice but develop incredible perseverance.
One child may appear confident while another is quietly overcoming a fear no one else can see.
Gratitude helps children stop measuring their beginning against someone else’s middle.
It brings their attention back to what they are learning, how they are growing, and what they can appreciate about their own journey.
Their progress does not need to look like anyone else’s to matter.
