Is Your Flamenco Guitar Sitting in a Dusty Case?

I’ve helped normal, busy, everyday people with dreams of playing flamenco guitar for themselves and others finally take the guitars that have been sitting in their closets in dusty cases for years—and actually play complete flamenco pieces authentically and with confidence.

I’m thinking about helping a small group of 12 busy adults with a guitar sitting in a dusty case and a long-time dream of playing flamenco go from “I’ve always wanted to learn flamenco” to confidently playing complete flamenco pieces they’re proud to play for themselves and others.

Let's celebrate! Because....

I used to be an electric guitar player in LA, playing rock and blues and dreaming about making a living with my guitar.

It sucked because I eventually realized I was chasing something that didn’t really feel like me anymore.

But then I discovered flamenco.

And everything changed.

That discovery eventually took me from LA to Spain. I immersed myself in flamenco and began learning from some incredible musicians.

Which led me to where I am today—and to something new I’ve been working on that I’m really excited to share with you.

I’ll tell you more soon.

Do you really have weak nails… or are you just neglecting them?

These are photos of the same index fingernail.

In the first photo, you can see a worn, frayed free edge.

In the second, you can see a clean, properly filed edge.

So what changed?

About 30 quick, light passes with a nail file along the free edge.

That’s it.

The purpose isn’t to make the nail shorter. It’s to keep the edge smooth and properly shaped so it doesn’t snag on fabric, develop a tear, and eventually break.

This little bit of maintenance took about a minute—but it may have saved the nail from breaking and costing a guitar player his tone.

I hear this all the time from nylon-string guitarists, both flamenco and classical:

“I have weak nails.”
“I have trouble growing my nails.”

But in many cases, weak nails aren’t the real problem.

Nail neglect is.

And you don’t need to go to a nail salon to take care of your guitar nails. In fact, I generally discourage guitarists from having their playing nails shaped at a salon.

Instead, every couple of days, take a nail file and make a few dozen light passes over the free edge.

Keep it smooth.
Keep it properly shaped.
Keep it free of snags and tears.

Do that consistently, and you may find that your nails can grow as long—or as short—as you actually need them for playing guitar beautifully.

It was a pleasure to collaborate with Ramzi El Rumbero and the Flamenco Guitar Podcast on Lead Guitar to play this classic Gipsy Kings tune on rhythm guitar.

There’s something special about playing rumba flamenca with other guitarists. It’s not just about knowing the strumming patterns—it’s about listening, locking into the compás, and finding that groove together.
