Moderna and Merck shares soared this week after their personalized mRNA cancer treatment hit its target in a late-stage clinical trial — successfully preventing high-risk melanoma from recurring or spreading. Moderna's stock jumped 177% in a single day, while Merck rose 12.6%.

The therapy, tested alongside Merck's Keytruda in over 1,100 patients, could launch commercially as early as next year — and researchers say it could eventually be adapted for kidney, bladder, and pancreatic cancers too.

"We may be entering an era" of truly personalized cancer care, says William Soliman, CEO of the Accreditation Council for Medical Affairs.
