These pictures were provided by Jess Hopkins - great grandson to Auva Clare. Auva Clare worked for Charles Cullen Popnoe that was born at Silver Valley in 1870. The back of the picture says Mountain View - not sure if that was the name of the ranch or if this house was in Mountain View, TX.

“THIS OLD HOUSE”

To most people driving by, this is just an old house of days gone by! But to me it’s much more than that! It’s a part of my childhood that can never be erased and the memories created were some of the best by two wonderful people named Daphene and Ray Floyd! Daphene was my babysitter on the days when my Dad had to work cattle on ranches or at Abilene Livestock Auction. Mother worked in Cross Plains teaching and my two older sisters were with her during the week.

You see Daphene and Ray weren’t able to have kids - so I was blessed to be “one of theirs” and we had the best beans and cornbread (made in a cast iron skillet) and my favorite meal! We also went down to Mr. McGinnis store at Oplin and she bought me bubble gum ci**rs and candy ci******es among other things! We went over to Mr. Barrett’s house at Lawn (Daphene‘s Daddy) to visit. We also went down and played cards with Marietta and Inez Windham while the men worked cattle. Those days were precious and a part of what molded me! I just felt like this special memory would be a Christmas gift to all!
