If you were a high schooler in the 1990s, you know we lived in a golden window of time: right between rotary phones and social media, landlines and iPhones, mix tapes and Spotify playlists. And man, was it fun.

We didn’t have smartphones glued to our hands. We had to memorize phone numbers, call our friends’ houses, and actually talk to their parents first before we could even think about making plans. Friday night plans? You made them at school or hoped your friend called your house before your dad picked up the phone and said, “Who is this?”

Music was everything. We had real variety- grunge, gangsta rap, pop, R&B slow jams, and skater punk all living together in perfect harmony. You recorded your favorite songs off the radio on a cassette tape and prayed the DJ wouldn’t talk over the intro. If you got a CD, it was a prized possession. If you had a Discman with skip protection, you were high-tech royalty.

Fashion? It was chaotic in the best way. Baggy jeans, flannel shirts, chokers, Starter jackets, and Airwalks. We dressed like we were either going to a Pearl Jam concert or about to skateboard through a Mountain Dew commercial. And those who dared wore JNCOs so wide you could smuggle an entire boombox in one pant leg.

We passed notes in class, folded like origami masterpieces, and absolutely no one texted. If someone liked you, they had to tell you. In person. Or they’d ask their friend to do it and circle “yes,” “no,” or “maybe.”

School dances were full of awkward slow dances to Boyz II Men and No Doubt, with sweaty palms and butterflies. There was no filming it for TikTok, just living it in the moment. Half the photos were blurry because your disposable camera only gave you 24 chances.

We watched TRL after school, recorded our favorite episodes of Friends or Fresh Prince on VHS, and stayed up late to watch Unsolved Mysteries even though it gave us nightmares. If you missed an episode, you just missed it. No streaming. No spoilers.

We drove around with no GPS, just vague directions like “Turn left after the old gas station,” and nobody ever knew exactly where they were going, but somehow we always found our way.

Being a teen in the ’90s meant real freedom. It meant making mistakes without everyone seeing it online. It meant being present, laughing until your stomach hurt, and making memories that weren’t for content, but for life.

We were the last generation to grow up just before the world changed forever. And honestly? We got the best of both worlds.

So here’s to the teens of the ’90s. We didn’t have it all, but somehow, we had everything.

Jamie Kristin Jones Brown, born on July 24, 1980, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, peacefully departed this world to be with the LORD our GOD on September 17, 2024.

Jamie attended Ooltewah Elementary School and Ooltewah Middle School, and she completed her high school education at Ooltewah High School in May of 1998 where she participated as a cheerleader and was a member of the track and field team.

After graduating from high school, Jamie attended Alabama A & M University for two years where she majored in business administration. Because of her love for cheerleading, she became a member of the cheerleading team with her joyous ray of sunshine and fun spirit. She continued her education attending Chattanooga College and graduated Cum Laude with a diploma in Dental Assisting (medical, dental, and technical) career degree in 2008. Prior to her death, in August she enrolled in Chattanooga State Community College to continue her education.
In Jamie’s professional life she worked various jobs and positions. She was a hard worker, a positive worker, a fast learner and a joy to be around. She started working at the young age of 16. At times she worked three jobs at one time. She did not mind working; she was truly a go getter. She was employed by Mars, Incorporated in Chattanooga until her departure.

Jamie knew the LORD. She accepted Christ in 1995 and was baptized confirming her faith. During her younger years she attended church with her grandmother and grandfather, the late Owen and Pearline Jones and during her teenage years she attended Hawkinsville Baptist Church and later in life started attending Hurst United Methodist Church.

During Jamie’s battle with breast cancer, she posted verses of scripture throughout her home on all the walls leaning on the LORD for strength and encouragement. She trusted in GOD to sustain and to strengthen her throughout her illness. GOD certainly did until her final breath and that’s when GOD said to her it is time to come home my child.

She was a beacon of light, a ray of sunshine, that was Jamie Kristin Jones Brown. Jamie was God’s light. She was strong and determined. She faced her battle with cancer with incredible courage. A woman of faith, her kindness mirrored the heart of Christ. And you could see it in every one of her relationships. She was a loving and devoted wife, parent, daughter, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend. Full of joy, fun and laughter, she brought life to every moment with a beautiful smile. She loved to cook, loved to decorate, loved fashion, traveling, having fun and supporting her nieces and nephews. She really loved her family. She loved people, especially children and children loved her because of her cheerful and upbeat personality. But most of all she loved Joshua, her husband of 18 years, and their two beautiful daughters, Jaliyah, and Jayden, her heart, pride and joy.

Despite facing health challenges and pain Jamie continued to keep going, pushing herself to enjoy life with her family. She traveled with her husband, close friends, and daughters. She was dedicated in attending her daughters’ school and summer activities. It was because of her faith in GOD she continued to persevere. She would say I need to continue to live for my family. Jamie will always be remembered for her beautiful smile, positive attitude, upbeat personality and the joy she brought to all who loved her and all who were around her. We will truly miss her dearly.

She was preceded in death by her grandfather, Albert N. Scruggs, grandmother, Lois S. Scruggs, uncle, Reverend Jonathan S. Scruggs, aunt, Josephine Scruggs, grandfather, Owens Jones, and grandmother, Pearline Jones.

She is survived by her loving daughters, Jaliyah and Jayden Whitaker; her husband, Joshua Whitaker; step-son, Joshua C. Whitaker, Jr.; brother and sister-in-law, Jamaal and Michelle Whitaker; brother-in-law, Antonio Hendricks; her parents, Harold and Jacqueline Brown; brother, Harold (Zulma) Brown Jr. ; uncle, David (Carla) Scruggs; and her aunt, Kimberly Scruggs; Carlos (Shannon) Jones, biological father, uncle, Maurice (Jennifer) Jones; aunt, Varna (Markius) Pettaway; uncle, Kosygin (Sherri) Jones; sister, LaShanda (Lebron)Sadler; and brother, Christopher Groomes; Special and dearest friends were: Sherika Sims, Teesha Richardson (Valdosta, Ga.), and Michelle Whitaker; her goddaughter, Carrone Benton (Valdosta, Ga.); her godson, Adrian Hall, Jr.; and her godmother, Queen Watson; a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives, and friends.

In remembrance of Jamie, let us celebrate a life well-lived, filled with love, compassion, fun, joy, determination, courage, strength, and a zeal for life. May Jamie, our loving wife, daughter, sister, aunt, niece, cousin, and friend rest in peace with our LORD and SAVIOR. We love you so much.

A public viewing will be begin at 2:00 PM on Sunday, September 29, 2024 at Crosspath Church located at 4201 Ringgold Road in East Ridge, TN, followed by a 3:00 PM funeral service.

Interment: Hamilton Memorial Gardens, Hixson, TN on Monday, September 30 at 11:00 AM
