Watch the digital panel discussion here - Jonathan Edwards & Slavery

Photos 10/14/2020

The Jonathan Edwards Center at Gateway Seminary will be hosting a digital panel on Jonathan Edwards and slavery. Join us for an important conversation as we examine the issue of slavery in the early American period, and assess how modern readers ought to interact with these positions today.
Panel speakers Ken Minkema, Leroy Gainey, and James Westbrook will grapple with the realities of slavery and Christian leadership prior to the abolitionist movements. Chris Chun, director of the Jonathan Edwards Center at Gateway Seminary, will moderate the discussion.
This event will be held completely online and will be streamed on YouTube, social media and at gs.edu/jec.

"Every Christian family ought to be as It were a little church, consecrated to Christ, and wholly influenced and governed by his rules. And family education and order are some of the chief of the means of grace. If these fail, all other means are likely to prove ineffectual." (Jonathan Edwards)

"To see God is to see him from 'within' his own loving. Seeing God is not catching a random glimpse of God, as if God could be seen and not realize he had been spotted. Rather, the sight of creatures have of God is caused by a specific kind of love upon them, illuminating them so that they can see him as he is . . . it is a vision of God by one who is loved by God." (Kyle Strobel on Jonathan Edwards's spiritual theology)

"Lord’s Day, April 10. Rose early in the morning and walked out and spent considerable time in the woods, in prayer and meditation. Preached to the Indians, both forenoon and afternoon. They behaved soberly in general: two or three in particular appeared under some religious concern; with whom I discoursed privately; and one told me her heart had cried ever since she heard me preach first." (The Diary of David Brainerd).

"The first thing necessary is faith, by which you may come to a knowledge of the truth. Secondly, hope is necessary, that your intention may be fixed on the right end. Thirdly, love is necessary, that your affections may be perfectly put in order." (Thomas Aquinas)

"Few orthodox theologians allowed more space for general revelation than did Jonathan Edwards. His ontology alone . . . in sum, is that all reality is the continual manifestation of ideas from the divine mind." (William M. Schweitzer)
