My purpose as an instructor is to help students gain the skills to play piano for the sheer enjoyment of playing and to be able to play songs that they like. My end goal is that if my students hear a song they like, they have the skills and knowledge to pick up the music to that song and play it. I want my students to want to play. I do not force the students to practice scales, learn in-depth music theory, or play warmups and drills but I do insist that they practice. My curricula are based on the likes and dislikes of the students as well as my own experience of what songs are effective for students to learn from. Most songs I teach are those that are recognizable to the student. Students are welcomed and encouraged to request songs they may hear from the radio, TV, movies etc. My teaching methods are not geared toward the music major, career musician or student who is being forced to take lessons.
