Our OMS Kiwanis Builders Club members served breakfast to Veterans this morning at Durkee-Seager Onsted American Legion Post 550.

11/11/2023

Veterans Day is a time for us to pay our respects to those who have served.

We stand united in respect for you, our veterans. This morning our students are serving breakfast to local Veterans at the Durkee-Seager Onsted American Legion Post 550. We honor their service!

This holiday started as a day to reflect upon the heroism of those who died in our country's service and was originally called Armistice Day. It fell on Nov. 11 because that is the anniversary of the signing of the Armistice that ended World War I. However, in 1954, the holiday was changed to "Veterans Day" in order to account for all veterans in all wars.

We celebrate and honor America's veterans for their patriotism, love of country and willingness to serve and sacrifice for the common good.

Yesterday, in observance of Veterans Day at school, Mr. Aiken announced the following:

It is now the 11th hour, on the 11th day, of the 11th month. At this time in History, the Germans signed a treaty of Armistice with the Allies, officially ending WWI in 1918.

Veterans Day originated as “Armistice Day” on Nov. 11, 1919, the first anniversary of the end of World War I. In 1926, Congress passed a resolution for an annual observance, and Nov. 11 became a national holiday beginning in 1938. Unlike Memorial Day, Veterans Day pays tribute to all American veterans (living or those who have passed) but especially gives thanks to living veterans who served their country honorably during war or peacetime.

Please join me in a moment of silence to recognize the sacrifices of all those who have fought and continue to fight for our country and the freedoms that we enjoy.

Thank you. Enjoy the rest of Veterans Day!!
