Rebooting the Community Compost Program! ♻️
The Pine Lake Community Compost Initiative is helping
Hartwick community members turn food scraps into a resource that supports sustainability, education, and environmental stewardship.
Participants receive a compost bucket to collect approved kitchen scraps at home and can exchange full buckets for clean ones each week. The collected material is transported to Pine Lake, where it is processed through our three-bin composting system and transformed into nutrient-rich compost for gardens, restoration projects, and future community spaces.
Last year alone, the program diverted the equivalent of 165.5 cubic feet of food waste from landfills this year through 273 buckets of collected material. Our first batch of finished compost has already been used to revitalize the herb garden outside the Lodge, and plans are underway for a new Community Garden at Pine Lake, set to open in Spring 2027.
Whether you're looking to reduce waste, learn more about composting, or support local sustainability efforts, there's still time to get involved this summer.

History is being uncovered right here at Pine Lake! 🌲 🦴 🔥
From May 27 through June 26, Hartwick College’s Pine Lake Archaeological Field School is taking place at the Pine Lake in Davenport, NY. This hands-on field school is co-directed by Dr. Namita Sugandhi of Hartwick College and Dr. Renee Whitman of SUNY Oneonta.
So far, students have been uncovering evidence that may connect to everyday activities from 3,000–4,000 years ago, including camping, food preparation, hide processing, hearth features, and stone tool use.
Students are learning how to identify, excavate, record, and interpret archaeological sites while studying evidence from prehistoric camp sites dating back thousands of years. The site sits on the flood plain of Charlotte Creek, where layers of flooding and silt helped preserve materials just about 40 cm below the surface.
This field school gives students the chance to build real archaeological skills while connecting with the deep history of the Pine Lake landscape.
