Oneonta Sigma Gamma Phi- Arethusa Delta Chapter

Arethusa, also known as Sigma Gamma Phi, was founded at Oneonta in 1894. We are the oldest Greek Organization on SUNY Oneonta's campus.

The Founding Members of the Arethusean Society lived during a crucial time in the history of women's rights. The Suffrage Movement was growing in strength and in resistance. It is generally believed the Founding Members of Arethusa wanted to nurture the potential and aspirations of each member, to give them the opportunity to "reach for the stars" through knowledge, experience, and governance beyond what was offered by the college and society. Our founders wanted to emphasize the values of maintaining dignity, through any situation, graciousness in all adversity, and to seek wisdom through knowledge. Through the years we strive to achieve these goals.
